The more eccentric ninjas tend to stick out in either appearances, jutsu, and/or intelligence. It is a trend I have noticed in Naruto.

Well the orange does two things. First, he wears orange as a tribute to Goku as Kishimoto looks up to Toriyama. Second, as Naruto gets older in the series he gets stronger and the orange becomes a warning to those who wish to challenge him. This is also why the Hokage always wears a white cape. Its a warning to anyone not to mess with the strongest ninja in the group.
