Description I started to grow this beard so I can paint these wild man looking self portraits. I think I'll let it grow a little longer, but I'll have to make it look neater! Gouache on 7 X 10" paper.

It's like they said in BeyBlade: "Let it grrrow!"

You could call that, "The Fisherman" and say it's a portrait of St Peter. I mean all that as a compliment by the way---don't want you mad at me!

very impressive, i'm more used to seeing Gouache being used on old posters and solid block colours, but this reminds me more of oils except for on the shirt, the face obviously has the majority of the power in this, those smaller marks highlighting the beard really help too, i think the roughness of it works better than being neat but that's just me and loving texture in art!

Thank you.
A great many illustrators used gouache in a manner that looked like oil paints,Β  Tom Lovell ( who painted in oils but did a few Gouache paintings ), comes to mind but there are many more. Then there are those very detailed watercolors by Durer that were actually done in Gouache- sometimes no distinction is made between opaque watercolor and transparent watercolor.

ah really? as a student i should probably know more about my predecessors but it's certainly interesting to know, i guess it all depends on the techniques you try for everything, marks and tools, definitely interesting to experiment with.

Excellent, as always! I've been so busy I haven't trimmed my beard for months and I'm starting to look like those guys from that duck show. I don't really watch TV so I don't know what that is exactly, but I have seen pictures and they've got great beards. Yours is looking good too!

good beard there, mate

I recently wanted to do a self-portrait and then realised how much arsing around I'd have to do painting mine I sort of left it for a bit. It's good to see someone actually enjoying painting beards!
