From afar it looks more like an explosion than a rose.

It's very much old school style and I mean old as in the likes of tattoo artists like Sailor Jerry Swallow. I love old school tattoos.

I think that old school tattoos tend to tell more of a tale, although most people to day will say things like 'Oh I had this done in memory of my mum/ dad', a lot of modern tattoos don't conform to the structured semiotics of old school tattoos.

People always say that Punk never really contributed to the arts in any great way, there is no real memorable art from it. However we all accept that Da Vinci is a great artistic master but the average person can only name at most two pieces by him. In response to people pulling Punk down as an art school/movement most people can name just as many pieces by Vivian Westwood, everybody knows the Boobs t-shirt and the Anarchy in the UK t-shirt.
The only difference between the Di Vinci pieces and the Westwood pieces is her's are prints, his are a painting and a drawing. All four pieces are commercially avaliable as prints. Who is to say which is more classy, I am a traditional medium artist myself but I do see the validity of print as an artistic medium.

I think one of the most imporant points about the punk movement is that it is what is refered to as a primative art movement. What that actually means is that the artists are unschooled that does not however make them any less skilled than a so called schooled artist. It is the main reason that Punk art is Raw and is alive and vital, the biggest problem I personaly find with schooled art is the spontenaity is lost it becomes sterile and dead.
At the time of Da Vinci oil paint portrature was still new so it hadn't become overworked and draged to that point of visual sterility. They were still learning how to use the materials how to compose the overall image it was still an adventure.
