So-o-o, during my winter holidays I came up with an idea of these creatures - stray (like in stray cats) spirits wandering around in search of something. Souls cursed to be forever lost for some deeds no one is even able to remember any more. Then I came up with the masks, and a friend of mine suggested this tiny but such a great detail with them being mandatory to be able to see, and from then on I knew that this concept is too rich to only use it once. I've always loved the idea of some unifying lore for my adopts so I decided I want to spin this out into a species with it's unique lore and stuff.

Here is the first short guide I made to catch the general idea.

Kmo'ah are sort of spirits and sort of not since they have a rather physical appearance. Due to being cursed and deeply connected with mystical stuff they can be considered an energy concentrate too, something like an echo of their past selves.

Originally, Kmo'ah are humanoids with notable animal features, often referred to as half-bats (though it's not technically true) because of how their nature is similar to that of bats: Kmo'ah have very poor (or rather non-existant) natural sighting and in the first place use their hyper sensitive ears to navigate the world. They also have tails, horns and sharp claws as well as several pairs of arms.

At some point in history Kmo'ah were cursed by the Gods (the God? no one really remembers now, so many years later) to be "forever lost". The Curse turned their bodies ink black to mirror their "cursed, forsaken souls", and stripped them from the ability to die to make their miserable existence never ending. Funny thing is, at this point no one really knows whether those ancient Kmo'ah were really this bad to deserve such a curse, or they simply ended up on the bad side of some twisted god.

Time passed and Kmo'ah learned to live with their Curse. For some it even lost it's meanings altogether. For others it gave purpose. The latter were the ones who created the Masks - complicated magical devices that allow Kmo'ah to actually see things around them, just like we, humans, do. Some hoped the Masks will show them the way. Well, it never happened. Or maybe the way isn't something one can see at all.

So, the main idea for Kmo'ah is the search for home, where both search and home have different meaning for each of them.
