See, THIS is how I imagine GLaDOS.
When people draw human GLaDOS, they don't grasp the fact that human beings don't have wires, metal, and bionic legs. I draw GLaDOS somewhat like this, it looks adorable. Only my version has an Aperture Science GLaDOS hat and the Personality Cores are all on a necklace.

D8 -has already bought the game- ... -all by its lonesome-
Well, I am restraining myself and not finishing the game until tomorrow (lawl) and... I made a mistake tonight... ><
I said '"one more level, it won't hurt meeee'" Dx And it was the level with the WCC. liek, omg. (okay, stopping now) But, I serioualy under-estimated the attachment I thought I would feel towards an in-animate cube. 8< I was cruising along with my cube (which was burnt pretty badly x3 ) and then GLaDos tells me to destroy it. D8 aaaaaahhh. "Wait, what? I just get one level? r u CERIAL!?!" I can not believe that I got attached to that freaking cube so fast. -cries-
What is it about that freakin' cube? 8< (I had already figured out the whole thing with using a cube as a shield, that way I could just run up to turrets and kick them over x3 ) ....

Hehe, ah well - Portal by itself is still good and there's tons of good custom maps that don't have any other game requirements!
It was actually a very slow attachment process for me... the first time I played Portal, I had no problems whatsoever with chucking the cube down the incinerator when I was told to. xP But the second time around, I dawdled more... I chilled in the rat den for awhile... then I wouldn't let go of it. :< Who knows what special magic this cube holds which has entranced so many other lost souls!

I was looking throught all things Portal under search and i found this and went nuts.
I LOVE WHAT YOU HAVE DONE. REALLY. Not just becuae i have a WCC toy beside me right now is becuase of i love portal and every one from the game, Whitch isn't a lot of people.
1. I love the look on their faces. it really gets to people to think that these two DO NOT like each other at all.
2. GLaDOS dosen't look like some weirdo
3. the diolog is funny!
Now i was reading a coment about GLaDOS being a blond headed woman in a lab coat.
Surprizingly enough that what my first picture of GLaDOS as a human was like.
So i clap my hands to this picture becuase it was truly made well

Warning: Essay Ahead!
Oh boy. The thing about GLaDOS that's so frustrating for me is how such an expressive character is "trapped" inside a completely expressionless computer. Don't get me wrong-- the fact that she's an AI is one of the coolest things about her-- but if she were flesh and blood, her facial expressions and gestures and everything would be hilarious; however, she is not, and they do not exist. The ability of a human character to show so much great emotion is one of the reasons why I think fan-drawn human!versions of GLaDOS have the potential to be so great.
However, almost all the "humanized" GLaDOS' I've seen around here are just scantily-clad ladies with HUEG LIEK X-BOX boobs. Excuse me? No. Just... no. I mean, listen to her voice (when I think GLaDOS, the last thing I think is "zomg sexy". When I picture the person that would match that grating voice, I see a short, dumpy, fortysomething, shifty-eyed blonde lady wearing a lab coat)! But I digress.
Your version is adorable. The multi-colored eyes thing seems to be a common theme... and her expression is so cute. Expression is what I'd like a human GLaDOS for-- not for bewbs. Jesus.
Although, for the record, if GLaDOS ever *did* become human somehow, she'd probably follow Chell around and whine and complain nonstop: "It's so cold! My nose itches! Why are you pulling on my arm? You're hurting me! I think there's dust in my eye! Don't you even care about me? You're SO mean..." etc, etc.
And we all know a "your mother" joke is so totally at her level. Highbrow, GLaDOS is not.

(Yay essays! It's nice to be reading something besides textbooks and lecture powerpoints.) xD
Wow, what you said there about expressions and being trapped, I think that hits the nail on the head. Ever since my sister showed me some Portal footage on Youtube and I heard the crazy lines GLaDOS had to offer, I really started liking her character a lot but I couldn't pinpoint any particular reason why. A person in her position must have so much stuff going on- conflicting feelings of love and hate for different things, envy to humans, questioning one's purpose and existence, a dry/witty sense of humor, loneliness- dynamic characters like that really bring life to a storyline and it's a pleasure to read stories that let you get into someone's head like that.
(Whoo, birdfooted a bit!) And yes, I'd agree with you there; GLaDOS would be like... so neurotic or something as a human being, and I think it's awesome. xD She's practically a protagonist/antagonist/comedy relief super combo! No wonder Valve was able to get away with Portal only having two sentient entities in the game. *Hides WCC under a tablecloth*
The boobs. GOOD LORD, THE BOOBS! I don't mind seeing a woman drawn with a bit of cleavage, but good grief there's a difference between breasts and watermelons. I'll admit off the bat that I run 'glados' through that darn DA searchbox sometimes several times a day. I think I've seen every human version of her that's been uploaded to this site. I don't like a lot of them, though... It's nothing to do with artistic abilities, it's just that I have such a strongly ingrained concept of what I imagine her to look like, that everything else just looks "wrong" to me. o_O; Especially the ones that make her look syrupy sweet and innocent. I personally don't think she'd be physically capable of such an expression (Unless she got drunk, I suppose [?!]) Even idling around, I'd expect she'd have a countenance of either exaggerated boredom or possibly rude disinterest. You want her to look peaceful? Knock her out, I say!
*Emails your comment to Ellen Mclain* I kid I kid nuu dun kill meh It's nice to hear someone else's take on the idea, hehe. Oddly enough, I kind of think of Integra(l) Wingates Hellsing from the anime version, or otherwise Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada (Um.. those two examples couldn't be any more different, eh?) xD Maybe 30's to 40's age. I see a meticulously groomed and dressed woman who'd most likely be condescending and aloof to others. An outsider would probably assume she's a really independent, no-nonsense, businesslike person. But only if you'd manage to get to know her you'd find out how crazy she can be. C: If she and Chell were to be friends- using the term VERY loosely- I think you'd be right on the mark in saying that she'd be quite the annoying brat. (In a charming way?)
I think I still want to continue with the human GLaDOS design though, just to see where it'd take me. I've been in a horrible art rut for years now, so now that I have *something* I want to draw a lot of, hopefully it can help me get some more practice down in drawing people, and work with gestures and expressions too. Might as well try to make something productive out of this creepy obsession of mine, right? xD
...And with that, I can now say: Holy crap I wrote WAYYYY too much. *sits in a corner* ;_;

Jaqhnun In reply to gryphonworks [2008-03-15 15:46:16 +0000 UTC]
Whoa. Hahaha, you're echoing basically everything I've been thinking about with regards to this character! I don't know what I can really say back... well, here's another essay anyway.
About all the conflicting emotions she's got: heck yes. She seems like such a simple character when you first look at her, but when you think about her a bit more, and about the things that have happened around her, she's crazy-complicated. It's why, when I decided I just HAD to write a fanfic for this character, I wanted to write said fanfic as sort of like a "how-she-wound-up-like-this" thing, because there's just so much stuff to her that one can never run out of material or different things to peel away. How the story's gonna end.... I can't wait to write that. Since it's pretty easy to tell that the fic's basically like a massively long intermission during the final level of the game, it won't be a spoiler if I say that Chell winds up following through on her promise to off GLaDOS, and writing for the computer while the layers of her personality are stripped away one by one is just going to be a blast. Knocking her out's the only way to see her peaceful? I agree completely, if it's her with her personality intact... you'll see. This is going to be very interesting to write.
One thing I keep having to remind myself to steer clear from, though, is angst. Ugh-- I've found myself perilously close several times while plotting the next few chapters, and I keep having to go back to her as a character and reminding myself that angst and the GLaDOS we know and love to hate never mix except under the most desperate of circumstances. True, she questions the nature of her existence quite a bit (at least, my personal interpretation of her does), but the key to pulling this more pensive side of her off is by never crossing the line into cable-slitting emo territory. Her ego, I think, would keep her-- most of the time, at least?-- from angsting about not being human, because she's got such a high opinion of herself and of her own abilities... or maybe that's just a wee bit of jealousy talking? I'm still working this bit out. However, logical thinking ("they (people) die so easily, I don't; they can get sick, I can't; they have to eat, I don't have to; they have to sleep, I don't have to; etc) would probably be something she'd use to convince herself that she's really better the way she is. Even though she can never lie down in a field of green grass or swim in the ocean or eat ice-cream or... *ahem*. Yeah. Poor old Gladdy.
And about the sweetness thing: YES. I won't name names, but one of the most popular (and well-drawn) human versions of GLaDOS on this site is... well, the exact opposite of what I imagine her to be, to be frank. At the point where she is right now, I don't think she has the emotional *capacity* for true sincerity or benevolence; anything that seems that way is most likely just her being her conniving, underhanded self. If GLaDOS ever began acting sweet and innocent, that would be a sign to me that something very, very terrifying was about to happen. .....That's why, right now, I love writing for her "young" self, because, at one point, she really *was* innocent and just curious to know about the world. She was wide-eyed and trusting, and genuinely happy, not just getting pleasure from the sometimes-fatal "misfortunes" of others like she does nowadays. ...Well, you'll see what happened in my take on her story.
And... drunken (human) GLaDOS? Oh, now I *really* wish I hadn't accidentally deleted Photoshop... I'd so completely draw that. She's such a fantastic, rubbery character for playing with various expressions.
Cheers!
P.S.: OH that damn searchbar. I have the same compulsion you do. "Oh, I've got a free moment-- I wonder if anyone's drawn a new picture of GLaDOS?" then I hit 'return' and wind up closing the browser in disappointment a minute later. Sigh... WCC gets all the love. Little prick.
(I'm kidding. He's cool, he's cool. )

Sweeeeeeeet, this is like a behind-the-scenes special for your story, which is totally great! Author commentary can be as engaging as the story itself. It sounds like you've got loads of story content building up in the upcoming chapters; omg I'm so excited to read it! xD
I can't really imagine GLaDOS being angsty for any extended period of time. o.o; So for me personally, I won't be disappointed to not see it... hehe, yeah I think egotistical personalities rarely ever let things get them down.
And I'm totally lovin' this innocent "baby" GLaDOS! I don't know if it's what you intended, but I imagine her sounding much like the curiosity core at this point...
Oh yeah, that reminds me... from your take on the story, at the time of her activation does she already have those spheres attached to her? (Except maybe the "morality" one which supposedly was installed AFTER she gassed everyone, unless she's lying about that too! D: ) Sorry if that question's pretty out of the blue. xD But when I read a story and really get into it, I feel like I'm watching a movie, really. And when I'm not sure about how something looks, the video gets fuzzy... and.. fuzzy makes me sad..... ;-; Though, if the fact that she doesn't know what she looks like herself is supposed to be transferred to the reader and that hint just totally flew over my head (as things many times do xD) then I apologize!
lol, I think I'm finally running out of steam in regards to this topic. xP But it was so informative! The few friends I talk to about Portal just pass me off as obsessed and nothing more, and while that may very well be true, I dunno... I just see a lot in her character and I really like it. But when all I hear is 'God, you're obsessed' and the like it just makes me isolated. Or something. Uh oh, I need to stop now before I try turning this into a psychotherapy session. xD
P.S. Aww, no more Photoshop? D: Alas, such a dandy program that is... You'd probably be able to download it fr-- *gets gagged, handcuffed and dragged away in a nondescript black bag*

Jaqhnun In reply to gryphonworks [2008-03-16 02:24:29 +0000 UTC]
She sounds just like Curiosity Core! I'm so glad you picked up on that... it's so hard to get across things like what a character's voice sounds like using a textual medium that I was worried that that little-yet-important (at least to me ) detail would go unnoticed.
And about what she looks like... I totally get where you're coming from (well-written things=movies; badly-written, vague things=fuzzy movies with chunks missing), but that's something that's supposed to be a mystery still for readers and GLaDOS alike for now. (read: until the third chapter)
And about being obsessed-- as far as I'm concerned, there's nothing "obsessive" about it; at least, not unhealthily. We're both just suckers for her specific brand of awesome characterization, I figure! Personally, I've got absolutely no-one to talk about Portal-related shenanigans with (only one person at my school--aside from myself--has actually played the game), so I'm so happy I've had this opportunity to speak with (or, at least, blather incoherently at) you.
And I'm glad you liked all the tl;dr story info. I'm dying to write like these massive author notes before and after each chapter, but I'm going to control myself and not stray into overkill territory... better just to let the fic speak for itself.
Β‘Hasta luego!
