Using photoshop and a Wacom tablet, I use a hard edge brush with about 35-40% opacity. The shading process is simple as choose a color, lay it down, sample from the scene (alt) lay it down again, repeat. Eventually you get a gradient of tones, etc. I like to keep it messy.

Thanks! Ya, that helped. I'm not very experienced with PS, I think it's hard to keep a sketch (e.g.) messy because it's just so easy to make everything soft and round...
