Description After my last work It's not a secret that I dn't like the look of the dwarves from "The Hobbit" movie very much. But the image od Thorin Oakenshield was something that was killing me the most. I always imagined him as a grey bearded old ald remarkable badass. If You are about to call a bunch of dwarves and tell them "hey, let's take a trip through the whole Middle-Earth, slay a dragon and reclaim our homeland, what You say?" You must have balls of steel and a huge charisma to make that plan come true. That's why I used Ralf Moeller as my model, because he has a mug of badass and he could also look as a noble dwarf king if needed. The suit is a bit inspired by the witcher gear from Witcher 2: Assasins of Kings. That's because Thorin must have taken a lot of journeys during his exile, his outfit should look more like Strider's stuff than a King on a short hiatus. What you think?

This is great work ! I like the smirk and what you describe as 'badassery' I also see as some sort of recklessness. One of the comments below suggest that it's odd for an old person to show such immaturity but Thorin never really matured and that's one of the things I like about the character : as you mentionned he travelled a lot since an early age : he was 24 when Smaug attacked Erebor (which made him a teenager in Dwarf standard) and then wandered to Dunland and from there to the Blue Mountains through Eriador. But even though he stayed there for a certain amount of time he never married, which is common for the Dwarves but not for the heir of Durin's folk, which show to me that he never really started a life of his own since the realm of the mountain was taken and in that he is not unlike Aragorn too (though they are entirely opposite in a lot of other aspects : Aragorn is the perfect king while Thorin is the flawed king whose pride and greed almost drove his kingdom to a disaster which reminds me of Beorhtnoth of whom Tolkien had mixed feelings).

That being said, just like Aragorn, he is still able to pull out a regal appearance as he proves when he come to Bilbo's house. In that regard I whish you'd have included his blue cloak and his golden necklace. I otherwise like the journey clothes you gave him.

Just as I don't like much movie-Thorin I'm not found of movie-Orcrist. If Orcrist was the sword of one the lords of Gondolin it would be a longsword as Noldor are often mentionned brandishing this type of weapon, and as many assumed Ecthelion to be Orcrist's original bearer (and I agree), then it would be weird to have Ecthelion with a short-curved-sword when his men carry 'very long and bright and pale' swords as stated in The Lost Tales. As Elvish swords are used with one or two hands depending of the situation I will assume they are the size of a bastard sword (85-110 cm) : this is almost as tall as Thorin. But after all he is a Dwarf so it woudln't be a problem for him to carry a sword almost his size and to use it with both hands or one hand depending of his needs. I would like to see that sometimes.

Dude! Thanks for Your analysis, I would kill to have this amount of knowledge about Tolkien world I have also thought about his iconic blue hood for a long time but finally I decided not to include it because I think it wouldn't look nice on this concept. What about the sword, I can't tell if its a book canon or a movie thing but the sword Hadhafang (the one that Arwen had in the Fellowship movie) was originally the sword of Idril, princess of Gondolin and grandmother of Elrond. So in my vision times of Gondolin were also times of a new sword design era for Elves. Anyway, what decided abut this kind of solution was also an aesthetic matter. I thing a big single edged, saber like sword looks more cool in Dwarven hands, than a thin, elegant double edged sword of an Elven king.
Anyway, I love to read that breathtaking feedback! Thanks a lot for Your review!

Tolkien doesn't need your life in sacrifice : only some months/years reading and re-reading the books in full detail. I wouldn't fight you over the cloak, I see what you were aiming for, and I understand you choose not to include it, even though for me it could have worked if it was rolled on his backpack like this . Hadhafang is not 'canon' and in fact no elven sword in the movies is except Glamdring that has a great concept (compare Glamdring and Anduril and you have a good idea of how I can envision an Elf-sword and a man-made-sword under the influence of Dwarves and Elves). Tolkien envisionned Noldor to have longswords and I imagine them to be straight since Penlod is remarked for having a curvy sword like if it was something unusual among Noldor.
I think the only good way to achieve a pose like this with a longer sword would have been to have Thorin rest his hand on the guard or the pommel of the sword. Like the guy in the center here except that his arm will be raised much higher.

Another tiny aspect I forgot to comment about was the beard : Durin's folk are often called the Longbeard and for good reason since they have the longest beards of the Dwarves and have to tuck their beard into their belt (they also often divide it in two) not to be disturbed by it. So I was mistaken, like Katzzar, in thinking that you intended to show that since Thorin is an old Dwarf. Nice touch anyway.

Thanks for the kind answer !

This does fit the Thorin of the book quite well. HE is old, at ... what 195?, he was supposed to be the oldest of the company.
I love how his long beard is tucked into the belt.Β  And yes the clothes does look like someone who's on the road a lot.

It's not tucked into belt, it's more like a huge beard bracket. At least that was my intention to show.

ah my bad, the beard bracket seems to meet the belt so it looked like beneath that was tucked in.
It still Β looks good

I'd like to see your take on the BlackΒ Numenoreans. I saw thisΒ media.moddb.com/images/mods/1/… and thought it would be a good design reference.Β

I like the design in this Total War extension. Actually I'd like to do this some time, but I need to find some reliable descriptions about them and their visual appearance, any clues? I've read Tolkien's LOTR and Silmarillion quite a long time ago but I don't remember much about the Black Numenoreans.

I love this design! You've really nailed the feel of a wandering adventurer, and things look both cobbled together and utilitarian, as well as bloody scary! If I saw this Thorin running towards me, I'd run!

Though, I always pictured him younger - by sheer virtue of what he does AFTER he claims the Mountain. I always felt an older man would have honored his word and not started a war, and yet Thorin not only goes back on what he promised the Lake-Men, he actually attacks envoys sent to treat with him, which even in our day and age, is something which just isn't done.
He always seemed more rash and immature.

Though, on the flipside, you could also chalk that up to him being old and bitter, and probably quite scared that the Mountain would be lost again.

But, regardless of interpretation, this vision of the character is an outstanding piece of artwork! Well done

It's right what You say, it wouldn't match to a man (or a dwarf) to cheat the folk which provided so much help, but also I understood this as a madness caused by the gold fever and the Arkenstone. ALso, I wouldn't lay a wager on that but i think he was the oldest one of the whole company, maybe beside Balin. Everyone else was born after the dwarven exile from Erebor. Thanks a lot for Your opinion!
