Description I got in the mood to draw this a while back after playing Golden Axe: Beast Rider and then never finished it. Now, I've kinda finished it!

My feelings on Beast Rider are complicated! It is not a great game, to be sure, but I found after I finished it--which was a struggle, by the way, in which I was frequently frustrated, cursed strange design choices, and thought that surely I'd never play it again once I was done--that I actually missed playing the game, and wished there were more of it left.

I think what I really like is the theme and setting, because I don't think the old games were that good either, but yet here we are.

Not that I hated Beast Rider, but I'm more about the old school ones. So much nostalgia.

I hear that! Even if Beast Rider weren't awful, it really does little to capitalize on nostalgia or the iconic/recognizable quality of any of the characters. They're really charming!

I miss the "slash and kill enemies, ride beasts/dragons and atack enemies with them, move on, kill boss, complete level" thing from the old games. Sega could so do that, but probably won't. :/ Sadly you don't see alot of 2-player side-scrolling, beat'em up games these days.

Nope! But what between all the recent arcade re-releases, Castle Crashers, Scott Pilgrim, and that whole fan-made Streets of Rage fiasco, you'd think there was plenty enough indication that there's some demand for more of them! (Or heck, there's Dragon's Crown coming soon, too..) Any time Sega wants to clue in to that is fine by me!

Yeah it's a weaker ride, but they're so strange it's hard not to like them! They use a tail attack instead of fire.

What a classic. The weird protoceratops / bird things were the best thing about the entire game....

First strike against Beast Rider (besides no multiplayer that is) is that they didn't include those guys. It even made a cameo in Dynamite Cop! How could they leave it out?!

Yeah, there's defiantly appeal to the Golden Axe games even though they have cheap level design (remember trying to make those tiny bottomless pit jumps and just missing the other side), and cheap enemies that involve needing to play cheap yourself to beat. I still haven't played Beast Rider and probably never will, but it;s not like the series hasn't had duds before, like The Duel on Saturn and Golden Axe 3 on Mega Drive. If anything I'd love a console port of the arcade game Return of Death Adder, which is probably the best in the whole series by quite a margin.

You'd think they'd have done that in one of those PS2 collections Sega was cranking out for a while there. They did do a 3D-ified version of the original game that I heard was absolutely horrible, but a Golden Axe Collection certainly seems like a no-brainer.

GagaMan In reply to gsilverfish [2010-07-21 17:46:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they could cram all the different versions on there, and even that Zelda clone on the Master System. A shame those collections stayed in Japan, I would love those Wonder Boy and Fantasy Zone ones.

I have the Fantasy Zone one, it's great! (Though the Saturn port is still the definitive home version of the original as far as I'm concerned.)

I'd be happy with them just releasing that remake of Fantasy Zone II as a downloadable game here at this rate. One of these days i'll need to get a Japanese PS2 me thinks.
