Description Here is an close view of Flint, so you can see how gorgeous he is!  We wouldn't want to insult him by calling him "cute" would we?  Of course we would!  Because he is!  Yes, yes...he's fierce too!

Hawk or Falcon?  Did you decide?

Fabulous coloured plumage, Cynthia, and his face tells you that he his a first rate predator.

Lovely

I think that's one of the things that I love about him the most....his fabulous coloration!  He's simply so gorgeous!  Yes, he is a first rate predator indeed!

And he is a falcon in case you didn't already know....

Cynthia - The American kestrel - Falco spaverius - apparently occasionally turns up in the UK and hence merits an entry in my Big Book of Birds! Those black markings on the cheek and nape are characteristic, as is the colouration. In addition, there is a very thin black stripe coming from the base of the beak - like a tiny moustache.

Contrast with   - the kestrel I photographed in Norfolk.

Excellent shot "on the fly" as you say.  Somehow in this photo, she appears bigger than Flint but it's probably just the angle.  He used to use a female in his show years ago, Fluffy the Sparrowkiller.    She passed away.  The males are prettier I must say.  As most in the bird world are.
Interesting that they've made their way all the way to your neck of the woods....

Good point, Cynthia, about them getting over here. I don't know enough about it, but with a good tail wind and a couple of stops - Greenland and Iceland (?) - then it might take a couple of days. These guys will have enough body fat to keep them going for that period, I guess.

Cheers
