Description As Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors, I thought I might do a drawing for his A Calendar of Tales project ( [link] ) This piece was a really experimental one, where I really wanted to play with Pyramidal Composition (the arrangement of objects in a scene in a triangle, often very striking and used for movie posters). As the blue of the two soldiers' uniforms played such an important role in their descriptions, I decided to use a really restricted color pallet to highlight the difference between the old soldier's ragged and faded blue clothes and the younger soldier's pristine bright blue uniform. I also tried out some speedpainting techniques that I'd recently learned from IDrawGirls on Youtube ( [link] ).

!Spoilers for the story!

My illustration is for the January Tale. I absolutely loved the concept of people fighting between moments in time, holding off unknowable horrors. I grew up with my dad reading the works of H. P. Lovecraft to me as bedtime stories, so the Lovecraftian horror at the climax seemed like a really fun thing to experiment with drawing. Since these soldiers are charged with protecting world, I opted to depict them as being of different nationalities. I hoped to give their weaponry a bit of a magic-tech feel by adding strange engrave runes.
