Description My thirty ninth character timeline from my Thomas series: "Sudrian Stories."

In the 1980s, the Skarloey Railway bought two worn out Hunslet Diesels from the National Coal Board and using parts from both engines, constructed one good engine; Fred. He was put into service in 1989 as the Skarloey railway's third diesel engine (to Rusty and Rachel) and is used exclusively for maintenance and engineering work. Once a year, Rusty and Fred have to pull a slow train that spreads weedkillers on the tracks. One holiday weekend, Fred was supposed to pull the weedkilling train, but claimed he felt ill, forcing Rusty to do the job instead. For unknown reasons, he and Rusty did not attend Ivo Hugh's naming ceremony in 1996.

After Ivo Hugh had his first accident by crashing into a pond due to some slate trucks causing trouble, he was often teased by both Fred and Duncan, but the little red engine pulled through after he braved through a fierce storm to collect the sheep from the high hills of the railway. because of his bravery, Fred remained silent and instead chose to respect Ivo Hugh and his newfound sense of courage that this little diesel could never accomplish.

Although, very little is known about this particular diesel engine, Rusty assumed that he was lazy and trying to stay out of work by pretending to be ill, but it is possible that Rusty was incorrect and that Fred legitimately falls ill often. Rusty and even his sister Rachel was likely displeased with Fred for having to pay the price for this. it was then decided that Fred was in need of a major overhaul and surprisingly, this worked a treat and Fred no longer feels ill quite so often.

Although Fred is used to help with the maitenence and engineering trains with Rusty and Rachel, he often helps out with passenger and goods work along the line for some of the time, but despite all this, Fred can still be grumpy of having to do that much work and would complain for some of the time and often tries to make up excuses of not having to work that much which made Rusty and Rachel feel fed up and often times tried to get Fred to work hard like a really useful engine, again.

That was until Skarloey and Rheneas both had an idea to help get Fred to work hard, again. Skarloey told Fred his story of how when he refused to work when he first arrived on the railway and told him that he was covered in a tarpaulin and left on his own for days and said that the same thing could happen to Fred, permanently, if he cose to be lazy for good. Because of this, Fred promised to be a really useful engine again and to everyone's surprise, he works hard just as any engine on the SKR. He still grumbles as he was that sort of engine, but was careful not to create anymore excuses of being lazy in future.

During one winter, Fred often dislikes having to act as a snowplough to Rusty's maitenence trains. he would often be coupled up in front of Rusty and would be forced to push through the heavy snowdrifts aside from the tracks, but sometimes he often gets stuck fast which makes him feel cold, but grumpy until he was told that his brother Alf from the Talyllyn Railway was often used as a snowplough to help clear away the snow from the tracks.

Fun Fact: Like Ivo Hugh's bio, I understand that there is very little knowledge about this diesel engine since he wasn't illustrated from the "Railway Series," but I felt I should give this little engine more character and personality, as well. It's all supposed to be part of my Thomas series, as well for those that need context.
