Kalmin was born in the Capitail City to a family of jewelers. As a cub they befriended Tigertail and his brother Whitetail who were born in the Pet District. They were very close friends for most of their childhood and teenage years. At 14 Kalmin stopped using male terms and came out as non-binary. Tigertail and Whitetail were fine with it, but their parents were not. Keeping them apart whenever they could until after Tigertail and Whitetail graduated high school and invited Kalmin to be their roommate. Kalmin decided to stay in the family business of jewelry. When Tigertail started dating a fellow migrate from the Pet District, Silverstorm, Kalmin met Silver. She was looking to expand her store and with Kalmin could add a jewelry department. After finding out they were both single with the influence of Kalmin's parents they were pressed to date: "a business investment". Silver was a charming cat who had high standards for her store. They got along great but they both felt it was more business than chemistry. It wasn't until they met up at Silver's house that Kalmin met her other roommate. The other roommate being a grumpy big pegasus called TK. Unlike with Silver there was an instant fuzzy feeling and connection. They both felt it and neither really understood what it meant. TK hadn't been able to really understand love and affection until she left the Farming District and met Silver and Silverstorm. Kalmin couldn't get her off their mind. Despite it all the two just couldn't keep away from each other. TK was hyper independent and felt as she could only trust her roommates. Meanwhile Kalmin knew that TK had a dark past but understood enough to know that they had to be patient or the walls TK had built up would never come down. After two years of a lowkey close friendship her walls began to break and the two started a relationship which they kept from their roommates. They weren't ashamed of their love for each other but instead shortly after their romance began TK quickly ended up pregnant, way too quickly. Ajagara were known for their high levels of fertility as their offspring had very small chances of survival during or after birth. They were bred so only the strongest cubs survived. TK was stressed and wasn't ready for a kid. It's not that she didn't want a kid one day but she didn't want to turn into her mother and treat the kid like her mother treated her. Kalmin assured her that she was 10 times the pony her mother was, and they may make mistakes, but they had their friends and found family who could help them care for it. When Kalmin's parents found out with Silver they were not happy but had a lot of explaining to the two about what to expect. It wasn't good news. Hybrids were not uncommon, but they were much more unpredictable than the already strange ways pure Ajagara were. They told them not to have hope. Firstborns rarely ever survived, and it was tough, but they knew themselves what it was like to find out the hard way. This would be something that the two would go onto battle for years as they watched Silverstorm and Silver have kittens.
