Description I wanted to draw Konoha from the direction it's not normally seen in - looking down from the mountain at the village and the forest beyond.

Naruto used to come up there to play practical jokes on the villagers... but now he's out to impress Sakura by taking her to see the landmark

(whether she'll just get angry at him for making her walk all the way up the mountain is another thing, though ^^ let's hope she doesn't hit him next to that nasty cliff ... )

The most inspiring of the many inspiring locations Kishimoto has come up with...

...except that derelict city where Sasuke's cat friends live is pretty cool - I should draw that place sometime...

Thanks a lot!

As for drawing landscapes - have you tried modeling imaginary places with real objects? As in... um... if you were drawing a castle with a tower on top, get a cardboard box and a flask and put together a simplified version on your table Then draw and photograph that to get yourself started with perspective.

You can have fun putting piles of objects under old blankets to make hills, etc....

basically, an excuse to muck around a bit and also improve your drawing-from-life

That's a very good idea! Never thought about it that way.
I do use a lot of reference, as in pictures But sounds like something that definately is worth the try
Especially the blanket part is something I never thought of.
Thank you!

I see a lot of people who want to get into landscape and background art get really scared about perspective and spend ages setting up scary mathematical grids and such... but it works just the same with a small object as a big one, and all you need to be able to do is check the angles and put them down on paper. Plus using household objects can give you cool ideas for settings and environments. [link] started life as a cardboard cereal box with a hole cut in the side and a load of elastic bands tied round it

Yeah, well I'm one of those people I guess
Perspective is something I haven't been teached in at all (except the dissapearing point).
Unbelievable that you did that drawing with a cereal box.
I will definately check out your gallery!
Never thought household objecst would be such a good reference. Thank you

The sort of perspective with one vanishing point never worked well for me - it always looked sort of fake...

The best thing IMO about making fantasy landscapes out of real things is that you can discover cool shapes and forms that you wouldn't be able to create from imagination... and I always find it makes character posing easier too. I just sort of imagine that I was a tiny person wandering around that structure and it gets easy to come up with poses that work in the background rather than sitting in front of it

Glad you liked that picture, too!

Jorik-Spiritwolves In reply to Guennol [2010-08-24 20:16:13 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeah wandering in your fantasy can be very useful. though sometimes I'm more dreaming then drawing
But it is a good way to find out what and how you want to draw something. But using vanishing points... well, I just can't get it right. I'm never tought how to do so properly except drawing all the lines to a single (fictive) spot. So I have to rely on shading to create the depth instead of proportions from vanishing points. It's more like cheating and doesn't do it justice but as long as I don't draw epic scenes of vast landscapes (like you) it remains an option

Ofcourse I do! it's one hell of a view ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Guennol In reply to Jorik-Spiritwolves [2010-08-25 20:52:43 +0000 UTC]

I think observational drawing is always more fun Photo references might not be actually cheating (though I don't rate artists who draw straight from them) but they also mean you're not creating anything new All that hard work is just a glorified Photoshop filter... But then plotting things mathematically can suck too, and if you only draw what you know it aint easy to improve I guess

If you can't do mathsy perspective, I wouldn't bother yet. Instead draw boxes and cylinders from life until you're gtting the angles and curves looking right... then you have the skills to construct landscapes Course shading perspective is fun too... and you can use it to give a feel of vast scale and stop the viewer noticing that theyre looking at tiny objects in a still life

If you want to draw landscapes, go for it You can only get better ^^ The more you practise, the faster...

Jorik-Spiritwolves In reply to Guennol [2010-08-26 08:22:25 +0000 UTC]

I don't draw straight from a picture Only if I'm doing a portrait of someone (and when I started drawing).
I always use a lot of pictures as reference but most of the time only for outlining the picture. And since drawing from reallife observation shows pretty much the same thing, I guess the only way to create something completely new would be drawing straight from your mind to paper

What I really meant with cheating was using pretty much only shadows/shading to create depth and not so much the vanishing point

Sounds like a good idea to start with boxes and household stuff to get the feeling of vanishing points definately better then doing the maths on everything

...I should have replied ages ago - been away from dA for a bit

But yeah, I guess I meant that it's fun to have a real item you can play with as opposed to having to plan by making endless sketches. Kinda like how it's much better to pose a mannequin and rotate it to find the coolest angle than to sweat for hours coming up with a pose from my head, or finding stock photos that kind of match my initial inspiration but will never be quite right...

I always like working out composition problems with objects I can get my hands on, I suppose

I like using atmospheric perspective a lot I love how free you can be with perspective when it comes to making natural scenes without buildings or fields...

Modelling stuff on a smaller scale is a really fun way to come up with a scene - also, have you tried putting mirror on your desk to check expressions and hand details from life? That's really helped me too

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Jorik-Spiritwolves In reply to Guennol [2010-09-13 09:21:24 +0000 UTC]

No problem ^^ As I say to other deviants. Everybody knows you have a real life beyond DA. DA is something that should be fun to do not an obligation

Yeah your right. Though I want to force the manequin in angles it doesn't want to stay at times, so I end up using a photo ref. anyway.
But if I know how I want it and can't find a decent picture I just take (or let someone take) one of myself in that angle
But using reallife objects would definately make it more fun.

I would like to be able to use that, but as I said; it's a pain
Though I have improved ALOT since I started drawing and never thought I would've come this far, so I guess how I'll improve is still a surprise.

Facial expressions in the mirror, no haven't done that. I don't like looking in the mirror while drawing (hehe, but I do check if my hair looks alright when I have to work or when I'm about to meet someone)

I did however try and look at my own hands when drawing hands but never came up with a mirror, great idea I think it'll improve my hands a lot.
Definately worth a try!
Thanks ^^

Sounds like you're using one of those nasty wooden mannequins? I had one for a while and got so, so irritated with its crappy articulations and legs that wouldn't pose properly.... You can get a quality 'Obitsu' brand Japanese mannequin quite cheap if you search around - I use them for my animation work as they're so easy to pose and hold any position I put em into. Custom photo ref sounds like a fun idea for still images, though ^^

With the hands thing... use a mirror to draw your non-drawing hand in a cool position... and then change the pose and flip the canvas to use it to make the other one I tend to draw the mannequin's simplified hands first just to make sure I'm getting them the right size before working on top on a new layer...

Jorik-Spiritwolves In reply to Guennol [2010-09-13 15:34:30 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yup... didn't know there were different kind of mannequins
Maybe I should look around for an Obitsu then These wooden thingies don't like the way I pose them. And laying them down as if they're in bed or just died is impossible.
Even dynamic looking movement isn't possible, very frustrating so I just gave up using them and went back to photo ref.
It is a simple way to get a general impression ^^ But it woud be nicer to have something you just can put in a pose and make it hold it and walk around it.

Sounds like a good way
I always keep in mind that a hand should cover a face, but hands are always hard to draw so any tips are always welcome.
How do you draw shoes or feet then? also using a mirror?
Because can be pretty difficult as well

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Guennol In reply to leverieweasley [2009-08-19 13:10:48 +0000 UTC]

nope

it was painted entirely in GIMP (one of the older versions cuz I'd forgotten to get the update)

I use the ink tool, which gives very pressure-sensitive strokes with constant opacity, which I set to be pretty see-through so I can layer things up. it's not a technique I've seen used very often and I get plenty of people asking if it's traditional media as you don't get that solid digital look at all (I think the rocks on this one were brush-tooled maybe? can't remember...)

I wish I had an iPhone And being able to carry a drawing program around would just be so cool - no more need for sketchbooks when drawing landscapes from life
