Awesome idea. I love it so much, but I hate it cuz now I want to do it but you did it first so I can't do it lol. What did you use After Effects for?

Hehe thanks
I used after effects for compositing, color correction and light effects, i redered the tardis, front daleks, back daleks, background, background elements, and different passes ( depth of field, dalek lights mask, scene lights, shadows ) all separated and composed in after effects, i used photoshop for some minor corrections.
here is a rough mix of renders i did, even though there are more than that

Thanks for sharing that with me! So let me see if I'm understanding this, because I only use After Effects for compositing video scenes, but do all my 3D work in the 3D software itself (Modo). You used the 3D modo in AE to change the direction the Daleks are facing to face the tardis? Or did you do a 360 render of one dalek, or just make an array of daleks and then render two images of the array (front and back). I'm imagining the later cuz I feel like that would be easiest. To help me learn, and if you don't mind my questions haha, why render all these different things and them compile them externally instead of doing it all in 3ds Max? I've never used 3ds Max, so maybe you simply can't in that software, but I wouldn't know otherwise.

I did front and back groups of dalek on two seperate images. I could have done all daleks at once on a render but it was a bit heavy for my computer
Nobody is really doing all in a 3d software you usually render different passes and composite them in a compositing software, you have a lot more control on the final look like that.
I'll show you an easier example, that image i've made : guile93.deviantart.com/art/TMNβ¦
Here is one of the 4 turtle raw render : dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/71β¦
As you can see most of the work was done post 3D render, on After Effects. When i did the render i knew i would work a lot on lights and other effects.
People would use often Photoshop to compose a simple image but i prefer to use AE because it has a lot controls on color corrections and effects, i know photoshop well too but i prefer the way AE works. But it depends of works sometimes i use photoshop more.Β
Just as an example of photoshop compositing, even it's a bit advanced Β : cgi.tutsplus.com/tutorials/comβ¦

Alright I think I finally understand. It took me a bit to grasp the reasoning why people wouldn't just render in the 3D software because I've been told that Modo (the one I use) has a good renderer, so I'm used to controlling all qualities right in the software. However, I'm fully aware how long it takes to render high quality high detailed scenes (FOREVER), so I can understand why its faster and easier to just control those things in post. I'll need to practice rendering out controls like this so I can practice working in post.

Well it's not only a matter of time, it's also a matter of software capabilities, modo is good but no 3d software has a panel of tools as AE or PS could have to control absolutly everything on an image, plus add effects or corrections you simply can't do at all within 3d softwares, believe me the day i understood that i had to post work on my renders i started to improve my final quality really a lot. It's exactly as in photography, absolutly no work in 3D and photography that you can see in professional world are raw, they all pass through softwares to correct and model the final render as fine as possible, even for a static image.
