I don't often do fanart... this is... what, my second fan drawing? I love the character designs in Revolutionary Girl Utena.I wanted to go for a movie poster effect with this and I decided I needed more practice with digital, since I haven't done any in a while. But I feel like it's much too bland. Can I get some help with this? Does anything feel too vacant or bland? What could it use?
I would add shadows, infact I already tried, but it looked quite crappy with them, especially with the linework which is the dominant aspect of this drawing.
Help is VERY much appreciated.
/EDIT: I added a subtle texture in the background and some grainyness to it...

You have such a knack for communicating subtly through body language. The light downturn of her right arm traveling up to meet the end of her left elbow is a great line, and the way her fingers carefully caress the Sword of Dios is perfect. That readiness and careful contemplation in the movement really caught my eye in comparison to more of the traditional battle stances I tend to see in Utena fanart. I've always imagined her hair would be much thicker and bulkier than it looks in the original style, so that sounds off well too. Plus, that distant stare she seems to have is pretty characteristic of later battles. Overall this is just awesome to look at. I suppose my only qualm at first was that her head isn't tipped just slightly to the right or left to complete the motion of her arms. Just seems a bit stiff compared to the rest of her body, but I could be looking at it weird. I'm sure this is an older piece, but I'm really enjoying picking through your work.Β

This is one of my favorite animes.

I think maybe they should revamp Utena, but I am afraid that they might mess it up.
This anime has a strong fan base even today, I don't know of any fans of Utena who don't still like and love this anime.
It's always awesome to meet new people who like this anime.

This works really well as a movie poster. They should make a live-action Utena movie. And make it a (psychological) thriller. That would so awesome. I do think the background colors don't mesh well together. Well, they do, but they're too neutralized. The green at the top is good, though. Utena's pink hair compliments it really well.

I think maybe some color gradation on the skin (like pink or reddish hues) to make some areas look warmer and less flat would probably help. Like the leg areas look very flat.
The line work is awesome. I guess the only other thing is that blade. But I know very little about the character design to say much about it. It's just that it looks really undeveloped.

Compare to the movie, I prefer the tv utena animation. I think the whole theme really needs a long chapter to be stated.
And I think you don't need to add shadow to this awesome piece, or little shadowing would be nice. cos a special style could be perfectly expressed through this special colouring method.

I've never seen the movie but I haven't heard the greatest
things about it unfortunately. I'm a fan of the animation
as well, I'm thinking about checkin' out the comic.

FUUUUUUCK YES i suggest looking at vintage japanese movie posters. googling just that should give you what you need. think a lot about a really appealing layout. sorry i couldn't help with anything more specific. but otherwise i think it's an awesome illustration ghhh you have such a great style!

I think that looks pretty well like this. The lineart is expressive and suits the style in wich you portrayed her, which is, btw, awesome (realism looks just right with this character and her context).
But anyway, if you want to try something different, IΒ΄d go for textures and lots of roses made by hand.
