Description

Fred turned to Velma. "But, what does it do?"
It imitates things," she told him,  "and it imitates them perfectly. It was trying to imitate the dogs. But look at this over here - this isn't dog. It was trying to imitate Mr. Baxter before we hit it with the flame-thrower."
"Like, what are we gonna do?"
"Shaggy, I'm going to need some more dynamite."

This project was started just after Christmas, and was nearly forgotten about until last night. Based on John Carpenter's "The Thing," it's just proof that sometimes it's better to leave the mystery unsolved and get the hell out. It probably wasn't a great idea to accept a mystery up near the North Pole at that Norwegian station anyway. Yet hearing Fred scream "Torch it, Velma, torch it!!" would definitely be worth the price of admission.

Velma looked at her mystery-solving friends grimly. "I've devised a little test to see if any of us is the alien."
     "This is ridiculous..."
"Fred, you were the last one with the tracking dogs - that's why you're going to be first. Sit down."

Scooby characters are the property of Hanna-Barbera; The Thing is the property of Universal Pictures.

Are you hinting she'd be the survivor? If so will she say that line Kurt Russel said at the end of the movie?

I absolutely loved The Thing!  It was my all time favorite sci fi horror film...  And when the Prequel came out they actually showed what the thing looked like in the block of ice...   Do you know that I always wondered about that after seeing the original?  I waited 30 years to finally see what the original Thing looked like and it was as if there was a moment of true closure to a small chapter of my youth that was left wondering all of those years ago.

I thought that the Prequel was fairly decent and did the original by Carpenter justice.  It was also very interesting to see the inside of the UFO before it got blasted with the TNT like it did.

It surprises me not that you too were a fan of that movie.. Hell we were probably about the same age going to see it at the movie theatre when it came out in 1982.

That movie really disturbed me when I first saw it and at my young age I thought that I could watch anything and not even wince like Dawn of the Dead, Halloween, Friday13th etc.  But the Thing was different... It was just so incredibly horrific in the manner in which things occurred and the suspense that kept you guessing who was infected.

I'm glad that you made an adaptation of it Gulliver.

Thanks! I've always really enjoyed the franchise. Hell, I wish I looked like Kurt Russell with that beard and long hair ::chuckles:: I watch at least one of those movies every Halloween.

The gang all warily stared at Fred, eyeing him for any odd changes or patterns in his behavior. With little hesitation, Velma applied the red hot piece of metal into the petri dish that contained his blood. There was no reaction, unlike the previous one. As everyone sighed and looked down at the burnt remains nearby, Fred spoke up.
"Gang, it's been a long night...and you've all been through a lot..." His voice raised as he finished his sentence "but I would like to spend the remainder of this mystery not TIED TO THIS FUCKING CHAIR!!"

LOL I actually thought of that scene the other day...I love that line.

Daphne pleaded out of the locked room. "I'll be good...I promise I won't hurt anyone." Then there was a pause before she spoke again. "Keep an eye on Shaggy..."

I've just had a really great idea.

We take him on the rescue expedition to LV-426, send him to investigate the Atmosphere Processor, then dust off and Nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to make sure.

Without even reading the narrative, I saw that this was a parody of John Carpenter's version of "The Thing," which is why I prefer the original Howard Hawks movie of 1951.  Still, it is, like so many of your other artworks, a funny mix of the Scooby-Doo gang with a sci-fi movie with a cult following.  And I agree with your response to TheForbiddenTenet, if this scene were made into a movie, it would definitely be an improvement over the dreck showing in theaters nowadays.
Well done, good buddy.

Seconded; The Carpenter film replaces Hawks' claustrophobia and paranoia with "gross 'em out" effects.

Thanks! Just the thought of Velma running around with a few sticks of dynamite. Oh, God those movies were horrible; the early ones where cast well, but the writing was terrible. We took my kid to see them, so I had to sit through those things.

kiff57krocker In reply to Gulliver63 [2015-04-29 19:13:26 +0000 UTC]

Personally, as much as I like the Velma Dinkley character, I wouldn't trust her with a bean shooter much less a stick of dynamite.  And having to sit through one of these movies, even if it was for your child, must have been excruciating for you.  I feel for you, friend.

Gulliver63 In reply to kiff57krocker [2015-04-29 23:03:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's pretty bad when you can sit there and think, "Hell, I could write a better script than this." And I could.

It reminds me of the old Monty Python joke. John Cleese on a sketch told someone that he would have written for the BBC, but unfortunately he "had a degree."

One of my favorite pieces of British humor is the scene in Holy Grail where the guy has the cart for the dead people. John Cleese has that old guy on his shoulder, and asks, "Can you wait around? He won't be long." Eric Idle responds with, "I've got to go to the Robinsons, they've lost 9 today."

kiff57krocker In reply to Gulliver63 [2015-04-30 23:42:53 +0000 UTC]

Ah, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."  A lot of Americans didn't really get that brand of British humor.  Fortunately I listened to records of Monty Python's shtick so I pretty much got it.  And I loved it!  My favorite scene from "Holy Grail" was of the French soldiers taunting Arthur and his knights . . ."I fart in your general direction!  Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!"  Of course, it helps to know the Arthur legend and a little medieval history to really appreciate the Monty Python jab at medieval England.

My two favorite scenes aren't the ones that people normally think of as the best. The first is the political argument between the peasant and King Arthur "Help, help, I'm bein' repressed" and the part where the king of Swamp Castle is trying to explain to his lunkhead guards that they have to stay there and make sure that his son doesn't leave the room.

My favorite scene also involves Swamp Castle when the king who's apparently frustrated by his (obviously effeminate) son's refusal to marry a princess with a lot of land.  "You don't like her?" yells the king. "What's wrong with her?  She's beautiful.  She's rich.  She's got huge t. . .(he almost said "tits.") tracts of land!"  Classic funny dialogue between both the king and his son and later with his boneheaded guards.
