It was my idea. They are tied to each other o 3o; It was supposed to represent the VanShion pairing. The Kairi in Xion's lap represents her similarity to Kairi. The Sora in Vanitas' lap represents the fact that Vanitas' appearance was such because Ventus connected himself to Sora's newborn heart when his heart was stripped of darkness by Master Xehanort at the beginning of Birth By Sleep. And also to represent Sora and Kairi's affections for each other.
