Description Here we see Empire River & Western locmotive #772 dressed up and repainted to depict a Santa Fe loco of the same number for a new Western being filmed in some corner of the American Southwest. The name of the film has not been released yet, but is code named "Magic Bananas".

This would be the 772's first on screen appearence in any film. Interest in the locomotive umong other film companies and producers is spreading, so this old gal may have a new movie career.
***********************************************

Ok, back to reality. This is an Athern/Roundhouse HO "Old Time" 2-8-0. The model is a wonderful performer and has even out hauled some of the Diesel locos at out model train club!! O_o
Thusly, I recomend this engine to anyone who likes steam and models the late 1890s and up into the 1920s.

The one thing that I obviously don't like is how the front of the loco is blury. My camera is old, outdated, and just plain retarded. Plus it has an unchangable auto-focus feature which makes it really hard to get a decent shot while doing something like this.

The smoke stack did NOT come with the model, it is a combination of different smoke stack parts I have. The main body of the stack used to be an old MDC Roundhouse "Congdon" stack that came with a MDC Shay kit I got a while back. I cut the top part off to use for a "Lima" style diamond stack for the shay. Later on I removed the remaining lip that was left on the Congdon, now officially a "Balloon" stack. Then while I was fiddling with my Bachmann On30 Porter I inadvertantly took the top part of its stack off. appearently it just snaps on and off. Then just for the heck of and and to see how it would look, I stuck that part on top of my kitbashed balloon stack. The end result, as you can see, is a rather charming and tasteful Large Diamond stack.

While I looked at the model with this stack it immeadiately reminded me of one of those "Dressed Up" steam trains used in a lot of those old Westerns. Hence the movie shoot theme.

Well I hope you like, more photos to come.

I've gota 2-8-0 and a 2-6-0 on my Morristown & Loudon County Railroad. They're both big haulers despite their size, maybe it's because of their traction tires.

You betcha. Named the 2-8-0 Harris and the 2-6-0 Frank. What? I like to name my locomotives alright? I also name them after people I know and knew, including some dead relatives.

I never said anything was wrong with naming engines. I do it all the time, most of my engines in fact. At least those built (or represent) around the turn of the century. (1899/1900)

Interestin'. You know, if you removed her backup headlight, she'd look real authentic like.

How so? Having a large headlamp on the tender was fairly common back then and into the 1900s.

Really?

Yeah, though it was up to each road's preference. If there would be a lot if reverse running or night time switching then it was more likely for an engine to have a reverse light.

Would've been cheaper to have interchangable lights. Whenever a engine needs to go forward or reverse, you can take off the headlight from one end and place it on the other end.

They sort of do that in the UK. Though transfering a large headlamp from one end to the other would be cumbersome and difficult. A lot of headlights, especially early ones, had lenses 2ft across. Not to mention weighing more that 100 pounds.

It is, it's one of my best locomotives! Though oddly it does better running in reverse than forwards.

I think worm drives work better that way since the motor itself is behind the drivers on most models (or at least faces that way).

It really shouldn't have anything to do with that. The motor should turn equally well in each direction. That usually means something is binding in the drive train somewhere. Could be the gearing or even the side rods.

You can check by removing the motor and gently pushing it forwards and backwards. Watching and feeling if there is any binding.

Most of mine are pretty good. It's not any real problem, just a very slight speed difference.

I have one of these. I'm still trying to decide if I want to cut back the smokebox and add a larger pilot to back date it to the 1880s or leave it as it is and model it after #88 from Clive Cussler's novel Night Probe! Seeing this, however I decide, it's a solid model. I like your "Hollywood western" look.

Thank you, and it was a pretty simple modification. All I did was replace the smoke stack!

Although, right now, I'm in the middle of an extensive rebuild of one of these locomotives. An acquaintence gave me a box of parts once. It contained a complete working chassis of an Athern/Roundhouse 2-8-0. Same type of model shown here. The tender, and an old Tyco 1890 Ten-Wheeler body shell.

I'm now rebuilding/backdating the model to an early 1880s wagon top boiler 2-8-0.

I'm thinking of doing one as a Cumberland Valley 2-8-0, a copy of a PRR H2..

I saw one person make a Winans Camel out of one. It was a bit oversized though personally speaking.

What I'd like to do is use a Roundhouse 2-8-0 chassis and make a wagon top boiler conversion.

I have an old IHC 4-4-0, or rather it's at a friend's house.

I could use the body shell from it for the conversion. I saw it done on an Athern/Roundhouse 4-4-0, I figure the same can be done with the 2-8-0.

Nicely done up. I'll have to look for one of these, after I get a IHC Camelback, and 2-8-2. I do agree with the balloon stack, gives it a nice charm about it.
