I don't think it's a lack of appreciation for bookmarks as it is a lack of appreciation for books these days.
Typical attitude: "Why buy the book/novel/manga when I can read it online?"

thanks much. yeah it makes me sad. the new generation seems to be bent on digital media. I myself love holding a book or manga in my hands and flipping through the pages, instead of clicking the next page on my computer screen. oh well.
