Why do you refer to the creature as a "western dragon"? Common western dragon doesn't have serpent body. It's a creature with 4 legs and leather wings, which is clearly not the case here. It's probably the most common dragon type (in the art) too, aside Chinese and Japanese dragons.
From the depiction I would say that the swordsman is probably Chinese master, which would imply the Chinese dragon behind. However, the creature depicted is not a Chinese dragon as far as my knowledge goes. It is actually most similar to Naga, a serpent dragon kind from the East mythologies. Originating from India, to be exact.
I can be wrong, of course, but I suppose only the guterrez could shed some light on the story behind the depiction. Speaking of which, it's an exceptional piece indeed. I am happy to have come by it.
P.S.: Coincidentally, I've been using "dragon style" in my personal (and unpublished) writings and thoughts as an ultimate kendo art technique, used only by Dragonsworn - Guardians of the Winged Shadow. If this one is anything like it, that woman is beyond gone now
