what kind of paper is this on? everything looks great - I spend a few bucks on a big sheet of paper and even if I gesso it twice everything still looks like poop.

i think this is either Arches or Fabriano or something similar. it's a thick hot press printmaking paper that gets sold by the yard or foot off a huge roll (ask at your local art store, they'll know what you're talking about). i think this piece, which is about 5' x 4', was about $30cdn.
if you're having troubles working on paper, i can't stress how important it is to get a good quality piece of paper!! especially if you're working large scale. it may set you back a bit of cash but it's totally worth it and if you think about it it's still much cheaper than buying a canvas that size.
are you working with paint or pencil crayons? this is mostly pencil crayons with a bit of acrylics, and then india ink for the linework. i never gesso my paper because i like a really smooth surface to work on and pencil crayons look like ass on anything that's gessoed. if you're working with washes of paint, i also recommend not gessoing your paper. just tape or tack it down REALLY securely on a board or wall while you're working on it and don't untape or untack it until it's completely dry - this will keep the paper from wrinkling and turning out like shit (especially do this with smaller pieces of paper).
hope that was helpful! i've gone through a lot of hell with working on paper so if i can save anybody else some aggravation i'm totally happy to help haha

thanks for all the tips! I *really* appreciate it. I've been having a lot of wrinkling and bleeding issues with some of the less expensive papers. Usually I work on a small scale on bristol or scraps of matte gotten for free from the frame shop.

glad i could be of help!
if you're mostly working with ink, the type of ink you're using could also be contributing - especially if you're having bleeding problems. i've tried out a LOT of different types and the best ink and the type i absolutely always use is Windsor and Newton - again, more expensive but seriously it's the BEST. cheaper inks i find are much more watery and thin and that can cause bleeding and mess up your linework.

I think I've told you before, but you are really becoming one of my all-time favoirite artists. I can relate to the things you make, but I'm still totally in awe of them at the same time.

Sorry if that made me sound like a total creepster. XD
