I got a whiff of where the story would lead after Dante crosses paths with Phineas and thought of course someone will have to replace Mundus in order to balance. As to who would replace him well if not Dante - then it would be Vergil and of course this is what follows though I found the level battling Mundus to be more nerve wracking than the the last level though I imagine may be this is my imagination or maybe they were giving us a break after the Mundus battles.
