Description So, this is my hylian shield that I built for my Link - Ocarina of Time cosplay! I'm very very proud of it, as it's the first bigger prop I've ever made that I have been this satisfied with. My boyfriend helped me a lot in this process, as he is quite the craftsman once he gets started.
The back of the shield is build of wood, because that's how the back actually looks in the game compared to posters and art from the game, where it's just plain mertal.

How it was build:
1. the two metal plates were cut in shape and hammered/screwed onto the wood various places so that the wood sticked together
2. the handle was made and put on (it's not accurate, but according to my bf, this is how shield handles were made back in the days so that they were as practical as possible)
3. the leather strap was screwed on tight
4. big flamingo-boards was glued on the surface and cut in the right curve of the surface
5. the flamingo got covered in paper machΓ© (last layer was toilet paper)
6. the surface was sanded down, then covered in layers of glue and some silicone to fill out the bumps/holes
7. the edges and triangles were cut out of a foam sleeping pad and applied, the funny curly things were formed out of silk clay and applied
8. the edges, triangles and curly things got a couple of glue layers
9. it was all painted with .. fabric paint and spraypaint. The only reason I used fabric paint was because it was what i had, and I'm a cheapass who doesn't want to buy new paint if i can avoid it
10. it all got another lay of glue (for protecting the surface)
11. the tree on the backside got some tree-oil (wood treatment) to get a darker more realistic look.

12. put together with the rest of my costume and enjoyed : D

Not bad, not bad at all, especially the engraved bits like the metal frame work and the triforce popping out.
