He probably said they were nut brown because they were nut brown.
And I doubt any Clayr dyes their hair. In a fantasy world where the dead come to life, I think strange appearances are the least of the unbelievable elements.

Yes, I suppose that would cause a lot of criticism, but I do believe even Nix has gone back on a few things. I was a freakish Abhorsen fanatic in middle school and I screamed aloud during some weird silent reading time because I found an error. What is, I remember not. Too many years back.
I also dressed up like Sabriel for Halloween- even at school. I can't tell you how much noise I caused with all my bells!

Heck yes! What kind of Abhorsen would Sabriel be if all her bells were the same size?
I found them at an arts and crafts store. And then, I grabbed my belt, got the rings that hold index cards together and put the bells on the belt holes. I must say, it was ingenious- although embarrassing. I also tried to spray paint my hair black, but my dad wouldn't let me.

I love the Abhorsen books, Garth Nix is a genius - but aside from that, great work! She looks just like how I would imagaine the Clayr to be. And I love the addition of the litle charter symbols on the dresses!

This may seem like such a small detail to you. But they're too pale to be Sanar and Ryelle. The Clayr are mainly tan-skinned. Lirael was pretty much the only "Pale" one out of them.

yes he does but the girls were the only two blondes who looked even remotely similar i could find and they weren't dark skinned, it would have looked faker than fake if i'd photoshopped that effect
