I don't know anything about photography, but the focus in this photo is so engaging. Judging from the other user's comment, I guess I mean the depth of focus? It just draws you and softly suggests context without distracting from the food itself. Amazing.

You are absolutely right.
I like props/non-food stuff in my photos, but I don't want them to distract the viewer. So I usually put them to the side, or farther away, so they're still in the background, adding to the atmosphere, but not so sharp to be a distraction.

That's a really great idea. So you end up with a sort of softer focus on the non-food props and let the eye naturally focus on the food itself. I'll have to give that a try next time I shoot my baked goods.
