Description Kylie passed away 11/26/2013.
We found her the evening before lying in the yard and we thought she was a little under the weather. She had been very quiet which was unusual for her. At first, we thought she got into a spat with the other dogs while we were away. That night, we took her into the house and kept her close to us. Later, we decided to let her sleep in the bathroom just in case and hoped that she would be better in the morning. She wasn't. In fact, she had grown weaker and could no longer stand. She was rushed to the vet that day, but passed away a short time later. We were only there long enough for the vet to give her something for the pain.

Kylie had somehow gotten into a brand of rat poison called Talon that my partner's dad put out in the sheds. (We live on an acre of land and the sheds are way down back.) Either she managed to get a straight dose by slipping through the fence or she was hunting mice/rats with Macy, our kelpie cross, and was poisoned that way.

I'm writing this story as a warning. One good way to check for poisoning is to check their gums. We didn't think about it until the next morning when I decided to look. They were white. White or greying gums is a sign of blood loss. Rat poison attacks something in the blood that makes it impossible to clot.

Your dog can be tested for poisoning. If you have any hint or fear then do NOT hesitate. Take your dog to the vet. This is not something they can get over on their own. They will need vitamin K treats and possibly a blood transfusion if it has progressed far enough.

If your vet doesn't stock dog blood then you can bring in your own dog to donate blood. These were things we were told by our vet.

Don't let this happen to you. We didn't know what to look for or what was happening and by the time we did something... it happened way too fast. The symptoms don't even show up for a couple of days. Kylie probably dog into the rat poison two or three days before her death.

I guess that's all I can say. If you feel that your pet has been exposed to rat poison do not hesitate to take them to the vet. This is very important.

The white and brown dog is Wolfgang (Wolfy).
The black beast is Macy. She was Kylie's adopted mommy and they did everything together.
