Description

Huh? What? DD?  I mean wow, thanks. That is not something I ever expected (I'm shocked as hell tbh) and this was entirely too kind of you Lyricanna ! I am ridick honored you would think this worthy of one but ooooooh nonononononono.  Now people will know I'm a crazy broad that draws pretty/flowery dark lords which is so not canon appropriate. D8 Umm... I am very very VERY sorry any Tolkien (or Waterhouse!) enthusiasts....

-----

AKA: Maia of Angband

Finished finally. And I have officially began to shade everything like hair, even trees... I do like the look though.   Anyways, have my reinterpretation of Waterhouse's gorgeous painting 'Lady of Shalott'... but with less awesomeness and more Angbang feels and stuff.
Maybe Mairon would row a boat up to the Void (for some odd reason now situated between creepy sentry trees), sit outside and just look sad as hell that he lost his husband. I mean master.  Oh, and because of the Arthurian legend that surrounded the original 'Lady of Shalott' art piece (and because I love Arthurian Legend anyhow) I got to thinking about Medieval Knights and the favors (or tokens) they would receive from their love interests.  Therefore I decided Mairon could have totally given Melkor a "favor" before the final battle at angband...  sadly Melkor lost it just like he lost his feet.  Guess Mairon found it and keeps that little black cloth as a token to remind him of his lost master as he fucks Middle-Earth up for next few millennia or so.

Odds and ends to note: Mairon is fingering his engagement "one" ring in his hand, the tapestry depicts a dumbed down and funky interpretation of the final battle of Angband, and when it comes to that face between the trees just interpret it as you see fit. Maybe it's the green man keeping watch over Melkor's prison or maybe it's an artistic way of representing Melkor behind that black veil.

This is the second illustration in an angbang themed series inspired by some of my favorite historical artwork.  Previous illustration in series:

Aww, thanks!  I had a lot of fun with this... and just as many headdesk moments trying to get it to obviously parallel Waterhouse's painting.  I adore his Lady of Shalott so I REALLY wanted to pay homage to it somehow.  Even if it is only B&W fanart. XD

LOL. Only if Waterhouse had a secret love of heavily stylized black and white illustration and Tolkien. XD  But, heeeey, I guess it could have been his little secret.
Oh and thanks so much!

The black and white contrast is done very well, and the thick outlines give it a supernatural-ish vibe as well, I also like how there are so many things in it to look at, it makes the viewer pay more attention to what's going on in this artwork

Very good job, congrats on the DD!

I usually try to pull on the illustration technique of "thick and thin lines" I learned in college... but honestly I use it incorrectly from how it is meant to be used (a way of showing dimension or shadow or lack of). XD I pretty much just skip thin lines in lieu of thick ones to try and make the overall image stand out (and pray I don't blend my details too much where they run together).  It sort of makes things look like a picture out of a coloring book page tbh.   Either way I'm totes glad you liked this and thanks so much!

I don't know why, but this art style reminds me of Russia.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Gypsy-Rae In reply to Zorbonaut [2015-12-09 07:35:39 +0000 UTC]

Clearly this is because Russia is the only country in the world that is devoid of color and is in fact black and white.  It has to be true. The internet told me so and everything on the internet is true.

But in all seriousness I kinda see whatcha saying. Great. Now all I can think of when I draw is Russia. D8

Zorbonaut In reply to Gypsy-Rae [2015-12-09 17:48:52 +0000 UTC]

I don't think Russia is actually monochrome. After the fall of the USSR they just recolored it, like they did with Laurel and Hardy.

If it ain't overly detailed to eye searing levels then I am not content.    I like to draw things so that, hopefully, people find the overall image interesting and something they can look at more than once.... which since you mentioned that I am at least somewhat successful. It's what I strive for. It's a lot of effort, time, and love but satisfying in the end. =3  Anyways thanks so much for looking, commenting, and just being sweet Misty. I appreciate it very much.

Well, I must say that after some time an artwork that really deserves a DD
in my opinion. I also am a sucker for black/white arts, the more captivated
I am looking at this picture. It has depth, great black and white balance,
you put lovely shapes and details in the art. Really lovely to look at

PS: I am not very familiar with LOTR (though I have seen the movies) but
I really do appreciate this artwork, you did a wonderful job, keep it up

Gypsy-Rae In reply to DarkSena [2015-12-09 07:19:40 +0000 UTC]

Aww haw haw hawr.  Stooooop it. Yer ridiculously kind words are making me blush.... and turn into a sponge.   Sadly I wonder if most folks now-a-days don't overlook the black and white arts and instead focus only on colored art.  I mean color is amazing and captivating.... but black and white is just as charming and has its own appeal. Gods, there are some gorgeous B&W illustrations from the golden age of illustration that I could drool over for hours. looking at you Harry Clarke... But anyways!  I'm super stoked that you like the picture though and I appreciate your thoughtful comment. For reals.

PS: Believe you me, you don't have to know a lick about Tolkien lore to like this... actually it might be for the best to know nothing. XD Honestly I'm like you and have only seen the Jackson movies/old 70's cartoons and learned everything else from Wikipedia.

Aventisz [2015-12-05 17:25:17 +0000 UTC]

So from blushing bride Mairon became a pitiful widow in the end? But then, gorgeous as always. And it's a good thing you point out some points of the picture because my eyes get lost in the overload of cool-ass details so quickly and otherwise I would have totally missed that tapestry which would have been a shame because it's so hella cool My faw is the middle one with Sau grabbing Melk's cloak. Btw I laughed so hard at Mai 'fingering his ring' XDD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gypsy-Rae In reply to Aventisz [2015-12-06 07:35:41 +0000 UTC]

In the beginning he was a curious Maia who dared wonder about that sexy dark Vala then, after a brief courtship, he came a blushing bride... only to end up a sad sad widow who probably has a hidden Melkor shrine he prays to every night. XD Poor kid.    But he can be a blushing bride again whenever Melkor comes back from the void and starts breaking shit again so it's ok.

LOL. Yea. I pretty much realize as I make these things NO ONE knows what my thought process is and I really do shove a lot of small/subtle easter eggs into my art that will go unnoticed amongst all the eye searing details. =3  It's the nature of the detail oriented beast. XD  Hey, what a coincidence. The panel with Sau grabbing Melk's cloak is my favorite too. What great taste you have. I'd kinda like to do a full scale picture of that at some point but who knows how well that will turn out....

...I'm so happy someone else laughed at "fingering his ring"....

Aventisz In reply to Gypsy-Rae [2015-12-08 10:58:10 +0000 UTC]

Imagine the moment when Sau throws away his black lacy veil and all that and puts on some skimpy wedding gown in the moment he sees Melk return XD

Ah, yes, although I usually stare a long time at your pictures telling myself 'Rae must have hidden something else in there I haven't yet noticed'. You totally should give it a go! Because obviously you don't have enough ongoing projects already!

Well, if one Lusty Ardan Maia loses his husband, he must find a pastime

*sniffles* It would be a beautiful reunion. *bawls like a baby*

LOL. Well, that is certainly the best mindset to have when looking at my stuff because it is TOTES true. Rae: she who hides random shit (ok, mostly eyeballs....) in her art.  *snorts* Oh hell girl you have NO idea how many angbang, Maiwe, or Tolkien projects I got going on in my brain.  It's ridiculous and no wonder it's all I draw. I couldn't possibly get any of it done if I actually drew anything else. XD

....oh fuck me. You just had to go there didn't you? never you mind my mind went there ages ago  Oh that Lusty Ardan Maia and his secret past times... *holds hand up and walks away before she takes the prevertedness further*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aventisz In reply to Gypsy-Rae [2015-12-12 16:02:39 +0000 UTC]

And of course, they ran to each others' arms and lived (mostly) happily ever after *wipes a sentimental tear*

Yeah, those eyeballs, I noticed them! (Probably not all of them tho XD) Well, I may dare to say that's good because I luv looking at the angbang and related stuff you come up with

I knew you wrote 'fingering' there because you thought of perverted things too XDD But yeah, we have enough pervertedness going on, let's leave pitiful widow Sau alone with his past times

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gypsy-Rae In reply to Aventisz [2015-12-14 07:27:04 +0000 UTC]

Sau tripped over his cloak and face-planted into the dirt and Melkor promptly, but completely accidentally, stepped on his fallen Lieutenant but they eventually wound up in each others arms. One perhaps a bit more bruised than before but it was still a beautiful moment that led into a happily mostly ever after.

I dare say no one other than me will ever see all the hidden eyeballs and it really is a good thing you enjoy my angbang and Tolkien-y stuff cuz it aint going anywhere anytime soon.

*snorts* Yes, let us leave the poor bastard to his ring obsession as he quietly whispers "And Morgoth came.... And Morgoth came..." over and over for some unknown reason...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aventisz In reply to Gypsy-Rae [2015-12-14 16:53:38 +0000 UTC]

And a moment later, still in loving embrace Melk softly whispered in Sau's ears, so only he could hear: "Your robes got so dirty, my precious. That doesn't fit my bride... we should get back to the fortress and take them off"

You no leave poor Sau alone?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gypsy-Rae In reply to Aventisz [2015-12-15 07:52:04 +0000 UTC]

And then the returned dark lord carried his precious back to their ruined but still very cozy fortress and helped him out of his sullied robes. And strangely there were no attacks on anyone for the first thousand or so years... but only because the two love birds needed ample "quality" time to reacquaint themselves with one another to make up for the forever or so that they had been parted.

I no leave poor Sau alone.  I even pick on widowed Sau for I am evil and perverted... I thought this was obvious.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aventisz In reply to Gypsy-Rae [2015-12-18 12:22:20 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, there weren't any wars for a long-long time but the "hammering" barely stopped at that time and so the "battlecry" echoed far and wide on the land

Well, no, it wasn't... or wait, yes it was totes obvious So, ahem, I guess poor Sau, after he had been widowed, or rather after he recovered from his depression, so then he lost a lot of money, for he could no longer come up with new porn movies alone. Then he realised he can't pay the bills even with his widow pension, and he started a new business which crafted "fake hammers" - a business in which he could benefit from all his skills XDDD But even then, when he felt sentimental, he "fingered his ring" to remember the good, old times

Oh and btw, I saw your sketch of the new DS picture And before I would start complimenting how touching that scene is, may I ask if poor Sau is simply just asleep or he had been kicked in the ass by Melk? (Which I guess is more probable because I see his robe is torn)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gypsy-Rae In reply to Aventisz [2015-12-18 13:01:58 +0000 UTC]

Let me start by saying OMG. I owe you so many replies. D8 I apologize. I promise I'm not ignoring them. I just got a lot of schtuff happening in the real lifes (intentional mistype is intentional) but once things settle down I WILL be replying.   And second... LOL. I just realized you and I are just horrible horrible fangirls for the things we come up with for Sau and Melk. Just sayin. I love it though. I hope we never stop.

Interestingly enough, the "battlecry" was so loud it was much like Melk's shout that forever echoed in that one valley and so too did the, uh, "battlecry".  In another valley somewhere.  And whenever people passed through that valley they would blush harshly.

I'm oh so happy you pay attention to me and my very obvious and never very subtle ways. I feel loved. Well, rumor has it Sau used a specially made "fake hammer" that was very similar to Melk's own in those sentimental times.   And ya'know. I also heard that Sau also crafted special "rings" that could be used in conjunction with his "fake hammers".  I think he gave out those special rings to the men and elves in conjunction with the mind controlling rings as a super special offer to advertise his new business.

Your inclination is correct.  The poor baby totally got his ass beat and he's just a sad confused little thing that's hurting and likely crying since his fiance whooped on him.  Poor kid.  He didn't even put up a fight not that he could have to begin with in DS world.
