Description Back in my post Aayla Secura Wip 009, I hinted at a few secret things that I was working on.
Here is one of those secrets revealed...
Just a few extra little modeled pieces and my Aayla Secura model becomes 0biwanken0bie's Fern.
(His username doesn't seem to work as a deviant link for some reason... But this is her - fav.me/d8yzrfd )

0biwanken0bie provided some special help for me to get the appearance correct for Fern's accessories.
He has been driven slowly insane by the anticipation of seeing his DC (Derived Character) in my style.

Don't get me started on this OC thing.
Characters derived from popular franchises are exactly that - Derived, not Original.

Ooh she is looking rather amazing
I'm sure both Obi and Fern are proud

Thank you!
Darth Lascivio, er... I mean 0biwanken0bie appears to be in love with his girl all over again.

And Darth Blue, (whoops!) uh Fern has been so nice to pose for reference images so I could do this.

I hope they will both have a great time from this experience!

It's not just Obi that's in love with Fern

What's not to love?

You have a point!
I think I've developed a real interest in blue girls...

Good work on the headpiece! That's a tricky piece of geometry to get just right.
It's always exciting to see Fern. I'm looking forward to seeing what fruits come from this endeavor.

OC... DC... FC... Sounds like an argument of semantics to me. Nothing to cry or get worked up over. At least most people use the same terminology so that we know what each other means.

Thank you very much!
0bi told me that he used a crazy-expensive CAD software to model that head decoration.
I used his reference images of front, side, rear, and front/side to try to figure out the shapes.
Can you believe that I used a 1highx6wide plane for the center angular thing,
a 4highx1wide plane for the side wing things (mirrored over),
an 8 sided cylinder for the center medallion,
and an 8 sided cylinder for the headband?

I'm continually watching modeling, texturing, rigging, and rendering lectures in order to keep improving.
How are things with your training program? Are you feeling happy and increasing your skills?

Everybody these days has an 'OC' for every show on the planet - it has gotten out of hand for me.
The only 'OC' is one that a person creates which is not based on anything that came out before, and is therefore Original
- right?
Language is one of the victims of laziness brought on by technology.

Oh, I believe it! I've been doing some very serious thinking of modeling it lately and it is quite the difficult object to approach.

School isn't going so well. While I've had a few awesome teachers, my last few classes have had very neglectful teachers who aren't interested in helping or even participating in the classes. It's like I'm paying $20,000 to be self-taught. I'm really starting to wish that there was a physical campus near where I live to learn this stuff. Online school puts me at the mercy of email responses which sometimes never happen. I'm still learning a lot though and have definitely improved. I just fear that I'm not learning enough because I'm so busy trying to get my teachers to do their jobs.

I don't feel like getting into a semantics debate over the term "original character." Whatever floats your boat.

You are finding modeling difficult after all of that training? Or semi-training, thanks to the neglectful teachers...

I did at the beginning too. But over the years I learned that it is best to begin with a polygon primitive that comes fairly close to what you want to make. Keep it very low resolution while you work out your desired edge flow.

As you build up detail you will increase the number of edges/vertices.
Eventually you'll reach the stage where you can't add more detail, and then it is time to subdivide.
With dedicated practice, it will become second nature for you!

Thanks. Modeling isn't the tough thing for me. That's actually the one area where I feel rather confident. It's the intricacies of UV mapping, rigging, and animation where I've struggled most.

It will be alright!
The secret to improvement is still the same.
Deliberate Practice. You can do it if you want it badly enough!

She looks so awesome!!! I'll get you the rest of the info you need once I get back from vacation. I have to see her walking like Aayla's Clone Wars version does... those hips are so mesmerizing. Thanks for making this special version of Aayla.

Haha!
You are so smitten with your own character!

I'm glad you're enjoying this representation of Fern. I think the tube-top fits her very nice and snug!
Since I've been refining my rig with Talon, Aayla should be amazing in motion!
Dynamic breasts and lekku! And I wonder how much sway I can put in those hips?
Of course, since I must keep Fern's clothes on, I won't be able to use the breast dynamics with her...
It would cause mesh penetration with the tube-top.
So maybe I can test it out using the Aayla textures since naked Aayla won't be the same issue.

And you know what I really want from you when you return...

I prefer the term FC, or Fan Character. and granted I am guilty of Β calling mine OCs too, from now on I am going to be using more FC instead. I think it was fandoms like the bronies that had made the use of "OC" as the most common way to describe these type of characters.

habariart In reply to Kjara-draws [2015-08-08 22:09:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think that some people are just so desperate to own some kind of intellectual property that they want to use the term 'Original Character', even though there is absolutely nothing original about it. It's cool that you feel the same way.

I'm glad you stopped by! I still have plans for your Nova character, but I need to do more work on my Ahsoka models before I can accomplish that. Since Aayla was an immediate project that I was already working on - this turned out to be convenient at the time.

Maybe it will be in time for Episode 7?

Make sure to tell 0biwanken0bie that you like his character design!

I only did my best to translate her into the Clone Wars style.
And I didn't even need to modify my Aayla model at all!
All I did was create a few new polygon models, and changed Aayla's colors and there's Fern.

This is a great way to get more results from the character models I build.
Two characters from the same model - I can't complain.

Now I can get down to business on Aayla's lightsaber and then start painting textures.
