Description Guess what it is! Guess!

...Sounds good! Let's go with that.
I don't really know what this is. I wanted to draw some kind of awesome steampunk-looking device, and I did. Don't really know what it is or does, though. Though the general consensus among my friends was that it was some sort of time travel device. Let it be whatever you want it to be.

(I'm quite happy with how the wood texture came out)

Very nice design!!

Do you have any plans on bringing it into the 3-D world? it would look fantastic sitting on a book shelf or coffee table!

Oh gosh, I wouldn't know where to begin! I know I said I was going to get into prop making, but starting from no experience and low budget, just lots of research and asking questions. ^ ^; Simple things to start out with... (i.e. a scythe for an upcoming cosplay)
Thank you very much for the compliment, though! I actually pulled from Myst:Revelation among other things when drawing it. Mostly the different sized circles running along the top. I saw something like that in or around the first room you come to that has the crystal communication machine in it. I noticed the patter, thought it looked very cool and gave an awesome effect for such a simple design, and did it here.

When it comes to making props and costume pieces on a budget, I have become quite the recycling artist. I've re-purposed things that boggle people's minds when they find out where bits of a prop came from or was originally manufactured to be used.
I see art supplies or props bits in many mundane things.(Is that normal?) What someone sees as a garbage bucket, I see as armor pieces. A candle-holder becomes a laser gun barrel. A lamp becomes a robot arm.

Maybe you can find bits and pieces at thrift stores that match your artwork designs and put them together to bring them to life!!

Oh gosh, what have you done? Now I'm sitting here trying to figure out how to piece this thing together. What could I use to planks/boards of wood that shape? A dremel? Gosh, I have GOT to get one of those...

Mwhahahahahahaha!!!

Soon, everyone will be creating amazing pieces of artistic technology!!

But I digress...

You can easily use a piece of thick cardboard, like the kind on the backs of drawing pads as the wood surface.(Not the corrugated kind) Seal the cardboard and give it a paint treatment than looks like wood. Then a nice gloss should make it look very realistic. Plus, the cardboard is easy to cut!!

You should still get a Dremel. It is an essential tool in a "think-outside-the-box" artist's arsenal.

I was also thinking that the main body of the piece could be converted from a child's dashboard driving toy.(The kind with a steering wheel. You could remove the steering wheel to have a spot for your "wood" panel and view screen.

Hmmm. This might just have to happen. Well, next weekend I'll leave school and be back at home, and the week after I'll be back at work at a heating/air conditioning company with access to great group of engineering minded people of the male species who would be quite willing to help me put together the details in how to make something. So we shall certainly see. Thanks very much for the push and the tips! I'll certainly keep you in mind if I have some questions.

Heating and air conditioning job equals free bits of sheet metal!!

Sort of. Mostly I'm just the intern sitting up in the drafting room messing with AutoCAD all day, but I've taken home various broken bits of the plotter that were thrown away and things. Also the left over tubes from the plotter paper; like paper towel tubes, but thick, hard cardboard and 4" diameter and 3' long. I don't know what those can be useful for, but they have GOT to be useful for something! And we go through at least a dozen a week.

Oh definitely, I know what you mean. With getting into steampunk, especially, I've learned that everything can be something. I told my aunt one time "After getting into steampunk, you always look at things for how they can be used." While looking around a department store with her a little after giving her a tour of the genera, she said "Holy cow I see what you mean."

I'm sure I could get creative and figure out most of this, but it's got quite a lot of moving parts. The switches and levers mostly; I guess the rest of it wouldn't have to move.

"She has the 'vision'!" Paras exclaimed. "She sees what other do not see!!"
Eloquen firmly took hold of Paras by the arm. "The Magistrate must never discover this, or she will be in great danger."
"I agree." To be branded a Techno-Mage would be her undoing...and OURS"

(From the journals of Aether, Desert Birds Sky Marshall)

Sorry. Couldn't help myself. The above inspired scene just pooped into my head. LOL

Anyway, I was thinking that you should be able to get toggle-switches and push-buttons at your local Radio Shack or EBay. Other items can be made or found at the local thrift stores over time.
