Description [John 21: 1~17]

Even though Peter was confident that he would stand up for Christ no matter what, he ended up denying him....up to 3 times. For 3 years Peter and the rest of the disciples followed Jesus, in hope that Jesus would truly become the King of the Jews. But when the time came, Jesus did nothing to resist the authorities and quietly died by the hands of the Roman government.

Hopeless and lost, the disciples scattered. Peter, now leaderless, returned to what he knew best.... Back to fishing. However, when he tried to restore his old life back, he faced failure again as he caught nothing the entire night.

Next morning, a familiar voice advised Peter and friends to cast the net in the deeper waters. When they obeyed, miraculously, they ended up hauling up a ton of fish... a scenario that was way too familiar to them.... It was JESUS! The man they knew was dead came back to them alive!

Peter responded immediately! He was too happy and glad to see Jesus again, so he dove in to the water rather than waiting for the boat to reach the shore. But as he came closer to the shore, he started to remember all the horrible things he did to Jesus. He betrayed him even though he claimed boldly he wouldn't. He went back to his old ways as if the 3 years of fellowship and teachings between him and Jesus was all a dream. Though Peter was happy to see Jesus, he was also ashamed to meet him again.

Despite all this, Jesus prepared a barbecue for the hungry fishermen by the shore. Just like the old days, Jesus welcomed them and ate with them.

Jesus knew Peter would betray him, but instead of criticizing him or blaming him, he simply asked "Do you love(Agape) me?"

If it was the old Peter, Peter would without a doubt say he would whole heartedly love Jesus. But Peter knew he wronged Jesus... and wasn't confident anymore to love (Agape) Jesus to that extent. Peter did love Jesus still, so he responded "he did love (Felleo) him." Strangely enough Jesus replied back to that confession by asking him to "Feed/take care of his sheep."

Jesus asked the 2nd time if Peter loved (Agape) him. Peter brushed off Jesus again with Felleo again.

Jesus asked the 3rd time, but this time, Jesus asked if Peter "Felleo" him...
Jesus knew that Peter wasn't sure if he could Agape Jesus anymore, since Peter betrayed Jesus before. But Jesus forgave Peter for his weakness way before and now, Jesus was continuously inviting Peter to love him anyway so that the broken relationship can be restored.... If Peter was not ready to love Jesus in an Agape way yet, then he was pretty much asking Peter if he could at least love him "Felleo" way.....

Peter understood this and he grieved...he couldn't believe that Jesus would not give up on him after all Peter did to Jesus....he in the end accepted the fact that Jesus forgave him and once again decided to live for Jesus.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
*in the Greek language, there are 3 types of love = Agape, Felleo, and Eros
- Agape = the type of love only God can do --> unconditional, eternal, and complete
- Felleo = Brotherly love
- Eros = Sexual love/Passion

- Jesus asked Peter to love him unconditionally, but Peter knew he couldn't. Jesus understood, so instead of pushing/pressuring him, Jesus decided to be patient with him and let Peter walk at his own pace. Even if Peter is just loving Jesus in a brotherly way, at least Peter and Jesus' relationship is still there (even if it was just the bear minimum). Jesus will always love Peter in an Agape way = he always have. As long as Peter is willing to love Jesus back, Jesus was willing to wait for Peter to approach him at his own pace.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
In my short comic strip, it was too big of a project for me to recreate the whole scene .... (even this chibi comic strip took a toll on me).
So I decided to simplify the scenario and keep the point straight.

- The reason why you could tell the dude in the beginning was Peter is by the chicken that is next to him. When Peter denied Jesus 3 times, the rooster called ... which was already predicted by Jesus the night before.
- I skipped the fishing part, Peter jumping into the water part, and "Feed the Sheep" part (that's a 2nd part of the sermon)
- I just had Peter dejected and lost in the beginning, and Jesus approaching Peter first with fish and bread (a sign of Fellowship and friendship)
- though this comic strip seems simple enough, it was really really hard for me to draw all those panels. It was a great blessing and honor to draw something that was inspired from the Bible camp that I attended through the Holy Spirit, but then again, I was only used to drawing a single drawing, not a whole comic strip. = I just wanted to get the message across, rather than being all fancy~

** the Main message of this passage:

=Jesus knows our weakness and sins but he defeated sin so that he can now have a relationship with us. While we are stuck with our sin, and too ashamed to see Jesus anymore, Jesus approached us first. He did not ask whether if we were qualified to serve him or how capable of a person we are... he only simply cared if we would be willing to love Jesus back just as he has loved us.

- When we acknowledge what Jesus has done for us, then our horrible sin payment has been paid through Jesus. He paid that huge price, just so the broken relationship between mankind and God since Adam and Eve can be restored again.

- When you realize how much Jesus has done for you, then the next step is the desire to do what he loves. Jesus loved his people but now that His mission on earth was finished, he had to leave his people behind (at least physically). Therefore Jesus has been teaching 12 disciples to be his ambassadors when the time for Jesus to return back to Heaven. It's upto us Christians to remember the teachings of Jesus and tell to others about the revolutionary thing that Jesus has done for humanity (fixing the Sin Problem).

= * aaand that's why Jesus kept telling Peter to "Feed/Tend my sheep." Jesus didn't just drag around Peter and the others for 3 years for nothing. He expected them to do what Jesus did when he ascended back to heaven, not returned to their old lives.

Peter was lost at first, but thanks to Jesus and the Holy Spirit, he experienced Christ's forgiveness and Love. Pretty much next to Paul, Peter became one of the great leaders who started the early Christian Churches.
