Description Now I remember why I don't do birds too much. The feathers drive me crazy, if I'm not ready to portray them.
But I must say, this is one of my favourite owls, and one of my favourite types of forest...

This...wow, it gives me an idea for a story. Sorta like the reverse of Lord Thorn. The tree is very sharply depicted, very very real, and the owl seems...not out of place, he fits there, but as if he's a little otherworldly. Maybe a shapeshifter guarding someone.

The work shows. The composition you achieved is awesome, the owl looks alive and so does the forest. The face of the owl is too beautiful, I canΒ΄t believe how real you could paint her!
Those hanging moss-like grasses on the branches I do love myself, too...like in a humid forest...

You canΒ΄t stop painting owls... you cant... look at the moving clock in my hand, it goes to the right, to the left, to the right, to the left... you need to paint owls and forests, you canΒ΄t stop... you just cant...

Did I convince you ?

really stunning. I love the colour and light. I understand you on the feathers, they are always daunting. But you are so good with foliage details and such, I'm sure it wouldn't be too big a leap to apply that kind of method to the feather details

Lovely! Great job. Though I can see why the feathers would get to you. lol Still, I'm glad you do them.

We used to have a great grey in our living room. Not alive, of course. My mother saw one get hit by a truck on the highway. The truck did not stop, but she did. Unfortunately, by the time she got to it, it was already dead (or is that fortunate. . .maybe thats fortunate, after that type of accident, it was probably kinder that it was already gone!). She felt bad just letting it go to waste, so she brought it back to town with her and sent it off to be taxidermized and mounted on an old stump she had picked up. So we had this thing in a corner of our living room for years while I was growing up. It was not scary. Just neat. I used to play under it. The stump made a great place to play with my little plastic animals and the owl made a great 'wise old creature' sitting up on the mountain. lol

Oh, thanks...it can be frustrating...

Wow! Do you still have it? I think that would have made a cool room decor...yeah, sure, it's too bad it had to die that way, but an owl...!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Elentarien In reply to DeborahLewis [2009-09-05 00:09:37 +0000 UTC]

It really was cool. I have rather fond memories of it. Unfortunately no, we don't still have it. My family went through a. . .weird period and had a lot of strange people going through. (Not bad people, just. . .strange.) A bunch of them 'counselled' my mother and told her how 'demonic' this thing was. So she got rid of it. Afterwards, of course, she realized how stupid that was and still regrets that she did not keep it. But its a bit late now. I wish I had been older. I would have told her I would have taken it. But I was only 8-9-10 (somewhere right in there) But what can you do? At least she learned and has never repeated that!!

Now we have a hawk. It was killed in a similar manner and she got it mounted on a smaller piece of wood so that it sort of looks like its just coming in to land, its wings still out, but already tucking in. This is being kept! For sure. Though its been long enough that we've had some kittens growing up playing on his branch, and he's all dusty and ruffled where he's been vacuumed. lol But we do love having it. It is sad that they had to die. . .but at least it was not completely wasted the way road kill so often is. I'd really like an owl again. . .but I don't even want to pray for one because it'd mean another had to die. But. . .if another one was going to anyway. . .couldn't we have it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DeborahLewis In reply to Elentarien [2009-09-05 19:15:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I've run across a few people like that in my time. Strange is the word, alright.

It would be cool to have another owl. I don't know why it wouldn't be allowed unless it was against the law there. Here, we're not allowed to collect anything to do with eagles, (unless you're a native) and red hawk corpus delecti are illegal to have.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Elentarien In reply to DeborahLewis [2009-09-05 19:40:57 +0000 UTC]

Seems to me I've heard of laws like that. But I don't think its an issue here. Each thing thats taxidermized has to have a 'license' of sort. I know my mom has the one for the hawk stapled to the bottom of its stand. I also know she did not have any trouble getting it. I don't remember about the owl - but I would guess it would be something similar. She probably had one for it too. (Oh, btw, I told her of our conversation here and she said that she didn't see the owl hit. Both it and the hawk were already dead and cold when she found them. Guess my memory's off or I'm mixing it up with another incident. lol Which is possible. I WAS quite young)
I find that odd why they would do that. If you aren't killing the animals, why couldn't you collect the remains and put it to a use? Why must it be wasted? Then again, these 'officials' rarely make logical sense and seem to delight in being wasteful. I don't suppose you could 'import' one from somewhere else with a license? Then again, that might be hard without killing one yourself. . .and thats NOT an idea either of us would pursue, I'm guessing. lol

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DeborahLewis In reply to Elentarien [2009-09-06 23:42:48 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure why; maybe it's because the hawk is on the endangered species list, and it's a big fine to have eagle feathers or parts, unless you belong to one of the native tribes, here...I guess they don't want everybody and their uncle going out and shooting eagles, hawks, etc.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Elentarien In reply to DeborahLewis [2009-09-09 06:34:53 +0000 UTC]

I guess that makes sense. I mean, make it legal and people might get the wrong idea. Does seem silly to make it illegal to take whats already dead, though. I mean, the animal doesn't need it anymore at that point, and if it wasn't killed deliberately why waste it? But - perhaps thats too logical - or they don't want to 'make sure' of how it was killed before licensing it. Oh well. Maybe you can console yourself with the fact that you may never have the chance anyway? I mean, how often does it happen when you're right there to get it anyway. (Not often I'd hope. lol There are TONS of hawks around here and . . .I'll say 'quite a few' eagles too and we still don't see it more than those two instances. And those were years apart.)Not a lot of consolation, but better than 'not being allowed!'
