You made these wow!!! Yeah, I am wearing a mix of the draconic armor exotic set. Only changed the pauldrons and helpmet to make it more even looking. Colors black (midnight Ice) and darkred

That last picture with the skimpy set for female chars it's what my wife uses. Colors white (celestial) and pink.

Love your work!!

Will that heavy armor set with the tabard on the female middle row to the right be wearable by say a norn or is that human specific?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

haikai13 In reply to TristanNYC [2012-05-03 05:41:49 +0000 UTC]

That was intended to be a human specific armor, just as the first two on the bottom row are norn specific. I don't know if that has changed since then as I haven't been there in over a year now, but there was the idea that the races should have a few armor sets unique to them.

TristanNYC In reply to haikai13 [2012-05-03 13:39:40 +0000 UTC]

I figured since that is Seraph armor. And they are human specific. Makes me sad though cause I like that way better than the Norn specific armors. But love me some Norn haha.

And that wasn't supposed to be as insulting as it might sound haha. You just made the Human armor so cool it is hard to pick another race! Bastard!

Thanks, though I should say that there are also armors in GW2 that are quite revealing and non-functional as well (more seem to have been added after I left the company). The idea was to give players a choice where possible.

One of the things which I really, really enjoy about your armor sets (and most of the armor set's I've seen Arenanet people come out with for GW2) is that great mix of sets that are inspired not only by different eras in human history (for instance the top type armor and middle type armors would have been worn at different times in our history, had they been worn, because of the materials used) but (often more importantly) for different types of players.

For instance, I think all four female armor sets are fantastic and cool and would happily wear any of them on my character, but there are many people who either want to put their female character in ridiculous, totally impractical (and some would say slutty, all though that is completely opinion based and therefore negatable and debatable) armor sets and some people want their female character in practical, 'modest' armor sets which still retain a cool, iconic look. Even harder to satisfy are those who demand that armor sets for male and female characters look exactly the same or at least obviously comparable with only minor changes.

You manage to satisfy everyone--or you should, since the only people who will complain anyways are those who think that their particular preference is the ONLY CORRECT PREFERENCE EVER and therefore those stupid other people who have a different preference should just go play some stupid other game. In their defence, they probably don't realize how silly they sound when they say things like that.

The moral of this story is that you are a fantastic armor designer and, personally, one of the best I've found for a game to fit my tastes in a long time.

Thanks so much for the comment. When I was working on GW2 one of the goals was to have enough variety for everyone. It's a very tough thing to balance when you have a player base as diverse as Guild Wars.

My personal preference is for very fashionable yet practical armor as seen in the Final Fantasy MMOs, but I don't mind seeing revealing armor if it fits in the context of the game world. I can appreciate a great looking design even if it doesn't make much sense!

At the end of the day, I do think some people take it too seriously. The biggest problem in MMOs is the importance of gear because it forces armor designers to come up with crazier (which sometimes equates to sexier) armor in order to one up the last one. Instead of getting a diverse set of looks that fits into the game world you get a bunch of players running around all visually competing for your attention.

Esurio In reply to haikai13 [2011-12-24 00:55:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I can't even imagine having to not only come up with multiple armor designs but then having to worry about implementing those armor designs in a game and around motion while symultaneously making sure to create a wide-variety of options for a wide-variety of tastes outside of my own. I would imagine it being very stressful.

I'm much the same way. In my mind, it's only a game, and a fantasy game at that, so a bit of the fantastic and unrealistic is warrented. I don't want to run around in underwear but at the same time I want to maintain fashionability and have a wide variety of options outside of what is possible or rational in the real world.

Deffinately too seriously. If you have ever seen any conversation regarding armor on a site like Guild Wars 2 Guru...the intensity level is just short of insane to me. Either way, I really enjoy every design I've seen from you from both an asthetic and realistic setting. I very much hope that these armors are there upon release.

haikai13 In reply to Esurio [2011-12-26 05:26:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, yea, the team often reads up on the Guru threads so we know all about it! There isn't really any conclusion one can draw from all those opinions other than you can't satisfy everyone.

It's inevitable that some of these armor sets will be adjusted or "polished" before release. Hopefully it will still be to your tastes!

Yeah, "c'est la vie", what can you do.
It seems like there are a lot of creative people working hard on GW2 as a whole, so I'm sure there will be pieces that I enjoy, but I do definitively hope that there will be pieces at least reminiscent of your style.

Lovely work on bringing Kekai's Seraph armor to life. I would proudly wear that in-game. I already wore the one in the middle when I played the demo at PAX.

I like the stuff you make, perhaps I shall +watch. ^^

Hey, if I get my hands on that Seraph armor, I'll likely be "transmutationing" that up. Along with several other armors. I'm a bit of a hoarder when it comes to cool outfits. xD

Top row look acceptable for fantasy gear.

Middle row looks practical - even the lady on the right in full armour, nice!

Bottom row look ridiculous - why carry all that heavy metal when it doesn't even protect that much of you? And of course the woman has it even worse.

Jexxinto In reply to KlausTeufel [2012-08-20 19:10:10 +0000 UTC]

The characters on the bottom row are Norn; Norn emit a large amount of body heat, and they normally don't wear much armor for battle.

haikai13 In reply to KlausTeufel [2011-10-03 15:51:44 +0000 UTC]

Haha, well, that's the thing about fantasy games. You have the camp that is interested in more functional and realistic armor, and then there's the other camp that wants over-the-top eye candy unconstrained by reality. The hope is to have a little bit of everything for everyone.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

quickthorn In reply to haikai13 [2012-04-17 21:24:28 +0000 UTC]

To me the top middle female armour is 'eye candy' as it's so elegant. The middle row one is pretty cool too. So I don't think that functional-looking needs to be in opposition with looking good in any way. Personally I find the bottom row armour tacky but I guess someone else will like it.
