That's actually the given explanation ingame. He was too young to use the Master Sword, and not ready to fight Ganon. That's the whole reason why he was sealed away for seven years.

In Wind Waker, a young child is capable of using the Master Sword, so it's unlikely that Link simply wouldn't be able to use it because he was a kid. Plus, he had a piece of the Triforce, as did Zelda. And the Seven Sages weren't sealed away at that point in time. Frankly, we just don't know what would've happened in that situation.
