Had a difficult time with the lineart (especially for the hair...) but it was good practice I guess. It was pretty fun to color =v= My brother suggested the graph paper background and the texture can be found here: [link]

Ooooh, that sounds awesome! I had a bunch of friends who just graduated and a few who finish next year. I hope you have fun! College was an amazing experience. The actual real life things it taught me were how to manage loans/debt and how to do my taxes lololol /ded

College is actually a lot easier than people first think. It's all about time management and self discipline. I had neither of those qualities at first so I kind of screwed myself over freshman year hahahaha /cry
But yeah, it's surprisingly simple to get into the flow of classes. It's weird at first since high school runs on such a set schedule, but once you get into it, you won't ever be able to go back. xD
As for suggestions, the only one I can think of that'll be helpful is don't overestimate yourself. Don't. I learned that the hard way. Also, if you're thinking about working part time, try to work on campus. They're much better about working around your school schedule.

If you plan on doing commissions for work, I'd suggest that over a part-time job. Commissions will be less restricting. Part-time jobs are harder to work around, especially with school (since they schedule you for a set time and you generally have to show up for it). With commissions, you set your own pace. You could put aside one day to do like 10 commissions and spend the rest of the week studying for finals. Something like that.

ahaha that makes sense. I just hope I'll be able to work through commissions at a pace that actually earns a reasonable amount of money =v= Like, I would charge maybe around $40 for a CG picture that takes me 10 hours to do, so if you do the math, it's like $4 an hour lol
But yea, I definitely hope to be able to manage time well enough to do commissions while in school ^__^

Oh man, yeah, that kind of sucks. But that way, you have less obligations. I've had part time jobs since my junior year of high school and let me tell you, it's tough juggling school and work. Like really. I mean, it does depend on what job you get--like working in a library is less work than working in a bike shop but libraries require later/earlier hours whereas bike shops require more physical labor.
One totally ideal on-campus job at UCSB was working in the computer labs. My friends would all just do their hw until someone actually needed help. A job like that would be ideal but it's competitive since everyone wants it. I don't know how it is at UCB but I'd say just look/ask around and see what's most flexible. You're dorming, right? That helps a lot. Meeting people quickly will give you more options and if they all work, you could ask them for their opinions/experiences.
(But another perk about doing commissions is that you'd get drawing practice and you'd be doing something you actually like to do. It'll depend. Is the money more important than the work? It'll also depend on your major. Some people are really capable. I have a friend who works two part time jobs while maintaining like a 3.8 GPA in mechanical engineering. So yeah. I don't know if any of this helps but I hope it does...)

I'm afraid though that since I'm in control of doing my own commissions, I'll let a lot of other things take priority and then the people who commissioned me would be kept waiting and yea >x< Whereas a part-time job would actually force me to balance both studies and work. Idk haha, doing commissions also gives me an 'excuse' to continue drawing in the midst of my studies, so I'm really caught in between the two haha. Will just see if there's any other opportunity for me to draw and if not, I'll do commissions =v=;;
