Growing up Catholic and later Protestant (Baptist) we were never taught about the Maccabean Revolt (the reason for the observance of Hanukkah) despite it being a staple in Jewish history. In fact, the churches I attended had a nasty habit of "well if it's not in the Bible, then it's not relevant". No, no, no contrary to your zeal and sense of purity that's a very dangerous mentality.

History is relevant regardless if it is written in the Scriptures or not and is an impartial aspect of life. So to ignore any historical event just because you so happen not to find it in the pulpit is not a valid excuse. Trust me, if you guys took time to read up about the Revolt, including the events that lead up to it and happened afterwards it explains A LOT. And I do mean A LOT ! This event is one of many key catalysts for many decisions that were made by the generations that came afterwards, and it pays to know.
