Description The Burren (Irish: Boíreann, meaning "rocky place") is a 250 sq km landscape in County Clare, Ireland encompassing a circle of villages: Ballyvaughan, Kinvara, Tubber, Corofin, Kilfenora, and Lisdoonvarna. The word "Ballyvaughan" means fertile rock, an accurate name for the area because of the vast limestone, a result of sediment in a tropical sea 350 million years ago, that still allows for farming to occupy the main industry. Farmers employ the stone in various ways, such as marking territory.
