Description Oh my god, the amount of canon characters on screen is over 9000!

I was inspired to draw this by my two newest TBLT fan friends *TechnezthaTronBlue and ~RainbowTech who both coincidentally both see the "B-Movie Shop" scene as their favorite in the movie and have started writing their own post-movie story about what happened to the various shop appliances after their escape from the shop in the movie.

I was particularly inspired by Tech's picture here: [link] I really liked the idea of trying to create a picture that showed everything you'd want to know about the B-Movie scene in one drawing! It seemed like a challenging goal and I felt up to it.

-------------(skip past this if you've seen the movie ^_^)------------------------------------

So in Brave Little Toaster about half-way through there is a very creative scene/location that involves our hero appliances being found by the owner of a parts shop, Mr. Elmo St. Peters. After being forced to witness the live dissection of a blender they meet the 'native' inhabitants. These mainly consist of other broken appliances in the shop who are all waiting for their number to up and to be taken apart for their parts. (very disgusting when thought about) Many of them are practically insane after having to watch so many other appliances being killed in front of them and never knowing when they'll be next.

What happens later is a musical number called "It's Like A Movie (B-Movie)" in which the shop appliances, in the most creepy way possible, compare their situation to being in a 20s-40s horror movie, making many references to movies like Frankenstein, House of Wax, using common horror phrases and referencing actors such as Vincent Price and Peter Lorre. It's quite an entertaining music video and ranks up there at #2 with me next to "Worthless."

Something I think is really cool about the movie is how detailed they went for a scene that really wasn't that long (the whole scene is just over 8 minutes!). Making all these very creative characters but never really doing a lot with them like they could have. Really they probably could have made a whole movie out of JUST being caught and escaping the parts shop! This scene is actually a precursor to Toy-Story 1's scenes in Sid's house. Both movies in fact HAD the same Director.

For those of you who don't plan to watch the movie but at least wanna see what this picture is based on and have 8 minutes to kill, go watch the scene here, you wont regret it: [link]

-------------(ok start reading again from here)--------------------------------------------------

I am extremely proud of how this came out and I really hope my effort shows through. I had already had the basic background and scene in my head, but other then having the main characters in the middle surrounded by the shop appliances, I didn't know where individual characters would BE and my biggest worry would be that I simply wouldn't be able to fit all the characters in there!

I'm also quite proud of the fact that besides Lampy, this was my first time ever drawing any of these characters! I did use reference to make sure I got them drawn right, but I've never been one for straight out copying, so you have my word that all the poses are my own and were NOT drawn straight off the movie. Like I mentioned before, I tried drawing Lampy once years ago. This was when I had a momentary 'oh yeah, boy I remember that movie' moment.. not an outright obsession like now. I felt like showing the movie a little tribute for it's role in my childhood but couldn't get past freaking Lampy and gave up!

I thought maybe I'd draw him no problem at all now that I'm older, and out of all the characters he's STILL the one I had to erase and re-draw the most times! XD I don't know what it is man, it's just like, you gotta get every curve and proportion correct or he doesn't look right! On the opposite side of things, I got Toaster and Blanky drawn right the first time and without references just because of their simplicity.

Now, every main 'appliance' character from the scene is in this picture, a statistic I'm proud of, all but about 4.. the refrigerator, oven, phonograph, and of course the blender.. since he's you know...dead.

While it might not be immediately obvious, The size of the shop appliance characters were intentionally done based on their popularity to me. For example I freaking love the dinosaur-looking fan, it looks freaking scary man! While the poor waffle-iron who got about 3 short moments on screen is way in the background being alone and emo. X'D I remember back when I was a little kid the tape-recorder.. erm.. that being the one WITHOUT tits.. was my favorite character.. still is one of them too! You know, he actually really reminds me a lot of Bobby-Lee from "Worthless" ..both are about the same shade of red, both have crazy mouths, and both are just outright pretty 'wild' looking.

A last little note I want to throw in there. It's funny how mass character pictures like this kinda create their own stories as they're drawn. Most of the time your adding characters in as you see space for them, and making their poses on the fly with what looks cool. Why is it that Lampy seems to be getting all the attention from the two (confirmed) girl appliances in the place? XD Is he just really attractive by appliance standards? Geez, that guy seems to be getting unwanted romantical advances all throughout that movie! If it's not for those two girls, it's from the creepy MOAR computer from "Cutting Edge".. getting all up in Lampy's face and jizzing print-outs all over him. [link] XD But seriously Lampy go with it.. maybe that Reel-to-Reel tape-recorder'll let you motorboat. >D *shot*

The fan character scared me as a kid because I didn't know what he was supposed to be at first, he's like the only appliance who's face is on the back what would be considered his head - I mean if he's being used by his master his face will always be pointed opposite of where his master is, that's sad, poor fan.

NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE.
This was my favorite song in the move! I loved the DARK tone things took here!
This movie is why I became an appliance repairman, to give new life to old appliances.
Right now my workshop looks a lot like this.... only it's full of clocks and 8-track players.
This is some seriously cool art here!

Half-dude In reply to SierraGamer [2014-08-30 05:34:27 +0000 UTC]

So are you saying that in the process of trying to save old appliances you've become Elmo St. Peters yourself? Gutting one appliance to save another?

SierraGamer In reply to Half-dude [2014-08-31 04:25:14 +0000 UTC]

Sigh.... I'll admit I've junked a few 8-track players and clocks.... However I have FIXED AND SOLD 100+ 8-track players..... not to mention 200+ alarm clocks. (Yes I DO fix & sell 8-track players.... on Ebay.)
There's no point in denying I've stripped a few units for parts, and I'm not denying it. (I really DO wish I could've fixed 'em... but they were burned-out hulks when I got 'em..... long dead.)
So in my own way, I've become a bit like ol' Elmo...... Ironic isn't it?

This part never scared me as a kid.... I was laughing the whole time, and I can't understand why. (Maybe I thought they could all run for it in the night or something.... or maybe I'm just weird.)

The part that scared me as a kid (and still is jarring even today) is when Kirby sinks into the mud, and drags the others in.

I guess it was the creepy record player at the beginning of the song & all the appliances in that shop usally had an evil sense about them. especially that lamp

I didn't like that part when Kirby sank in the mud eather & drug down the others. or when Lampy got struck by lightning & i thought he was dead. until the next scene. it was one of a few movies that always had something going on to the characters in the film.

I have brave little toaster Movie on DVD along with

Seeing that movie is probably why I became an appliance repairman!
(I operate a lot differently than Elmo St. Peters though!)
Heck, seeing this movie at so young an age probably influenced my eerie weird art style.

thats awsome that this movie inspired you to be a repair man. back in the 80s my mom had most of these appliances

This is so amazing...this is one of the greatest films of many 90s kids' childhoods, including mine. I adore all of the interesting individual characters, and I'm so pleased that I'm far from being the only one who loves to think deeply about even the minor ones and develop names, theories, personalities, backstories, etc. I see you've done a lot of excellent BLT pics, and I just love them.

The parts shop scene has always been among my favorites (and though it's undoubtedly dark and scary, so are the clown dream, the junkyard scene, etc. As a kid, the only part that freaked me out too much to watch sometimes was the poor air conditioner's "suicidal" explosion. YIKES!!) I looove the parts shop appliances, the modern ones, and the cars in the junkyard. (I also love everybody from the two sequels, as well as the two novellas that inspired the movies.) You did a really, truly exceptional job on this and every other BLT piece you made. Just, wow. It's such a fascinating film, and it's disappointing to realize that something like it would probably never get produced today. (And yes, you got Lampy perfect after all that work on him! Great job! He and Kirby were always my favorites--and Radio...okay, I love everybody!!!)

Half-dude In reply to no1wantsthisname [2012-07-01 05:22:57 +0000 UTC]

Thank you I'm very proud of this. I completely agree with you, the movie is a legend and I feel bad for any kids who didn't grow up with it. I definitely think when watched at a young age like we did.. it really does implant that idea to care for and respect your appliances. I've seen lots of people on youtube saying the movie turned them into hoarders. XD

Well that's the amazing thing about this movie, so much care was put into every bit of it. I mean, think of it, the whole parts shop scene only lasts 8 minutes..... EIGHT minutes... and in that 8 minutes they not only created a genuinely creepy and mature scenario, but also created roughly 16 side characters (the parts appliances, as well as Elmo St. Peters, Quadruped, and that goofy customer guy.) Heck, that scene in itself could have been the plot to a whole separate movie all on it own! But they made it only 8 minutes of this whole movie. I've got 2 friends here on DA who are interested in the shop appliances exclusively and draw art for it.

That friggin' clown is the only thing that actually kinda creeps me out about this movie. Strangely I don't remember the clown scaring me when I was little. XD Most of the darkness of this movie flew over my head when I was little. IT'S MY FUNCTION!!!! heh heh.. I can actually copy that Jack Nicolson voice of the A/C perfectly. XD I really need to do a dub of his scene. I actually hated the sequels.. o_o I thought they were way too childish.. they really didn't capture the adult respect that the first movie had. I'd love to read the novel though...

XDDD

Hoarders! You know, I'm not surprised. I am definitely a packrat and hate to get rid of anything. (Sadly I have a mom who's a perpetual spring cleaner and just loves to get rid of stuff..."to make room for more," she says...oy.)

It's TRUE, and I never fail to appreciate it when that kind of effort and detail is put into a film. That is pretty amazing! Oh, geez, I would LOVE for a separate movie to be made about the parts shop appliances! That would be brilliant. Each one is unique and intriguing enough to become its own fully developed character. Oh, that is awesome. I used to have a friend on LiveJournal who was equally obsessed with this movie, and her favorites were the blue 80s boombox (one of the "cutting edge" guys) and the "creepy cassette player."
Actually, come to think of it, it's no wonder that this movie has so many connections and similarities to Pixar films...they love to look at inanimate objects and develop 'a whole new world' around them. They also love large casts, and have a diverse "gang" in each of their films. All of the BLT movies include LOADS of individuals, in just that manner.

Lol...my dad's favorite lines are from that eccentric customer. "Oh, boy. Heaven sent you to me." "Just wonderin' if you got them radio tubes."

I found several scenes scary--but in a good way. Even as a kid, I loved scary, creepy things. Dat clown, though, man...*shudder* I might place clowns second to needles on my list of "phobias." This is one movie that definitely gets better and better as you get older and can understand and appreciate its complexity more deeply. AHAHA...a dub would be awesome. Phil Hartman did an almost terrifyingly awesome job with the Nicholson-esque A/C voice. I bought both novellas (the original, and the Mars one) during the height of my obsession several years ago. Though shorter and simpler, they are very worth reading...the characterizations, designs, and plots were really interesting to compare with what they all became in the movie.

I felt the same way about the sequels at first (especially "Goes to Mars"), but then they grew on me in a big way over time, and I eventually came to embrace the whole trilogy. The original remains the best, naturally, and is the most mature.

If I have to put something away in storage that's been a lot of us to me, or throw it away, I do it with reverence. At the most I'll tell it how good it served me and that I'm thankful, pet it or hug it.. or at the least not act careless while doing it.

I'd imagine if it were it's own movie it'd take place mostly before the first movie and the main-characters arrive. Though I do think the first movie imposed a slight 'time warp' effect since they get to the shop during the day time, then 8 minutes later it's late sunset. XD So you could imply they were there for a couple hours in reality. I've actually got a side-comic started.. probably finish it when I have time.. filling in a bit of the story. It focuses on the poor Blender who dies in the movie, starting when he/she's brought in and sold by it's owner.. then following it through it's first and last night in the shop. I planned on developing Elmo's dog Quadruped a bit in the comic, making him out to surprisingly being an antagonist... being loyal and playful when his owner is around but then at night.. a merciless guard-dog making sure none of the appliances escape. After all he's got quite a similar relationship to his 'master' as appliances do.. not wanting to fail them and wanting to be useful.. if one of them escapes it'll look like a robber came in and thus Quadruped wasn't doing his job of guarding the shop. Though I thought making him an antagonist does make the appliances breaking the door down and chasing him off more rewarding. XD

She's kinda seemed to move on from TLT to other stuff, but my friend TornadoWeirdo is one of the artists I told you about, she wants/wanted to do a sequel story focusing on the shop appliances after they escaped: [link] She also developed some personalities for some of them. My other shop appliance fan friends is TechnezthaTronBlue. She actually has a fiction written out focusing on her fav character Mish Mash.. she even drew a picture of how she imagined she looked before she was mutilated. [link]

"blue 80s boombox" you mean the obvious Asian stereotype? XD I'm not sure if I told you already but I want to do another picture in the style of this one with the 80s cutting edge appliances.. I've just been so focused on this Pinky comic I haven't started. 9.9

That customer guy's voice acting is SO bad that it's funny.. I really wonder if they intentionally made the guy sound so bad. XD He's like a spiritual successor to Tommy Wiseau.. [link] XD

That clown always just reminded me of Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal. XD

That's so sweet! I do the same thing! A lot of people would say that
that's stupid and ridiculous, but to me it seems only right to let
things "know" how much you appreciate them and their services to
you.

Yeah, that makes sense...I always assumed that the literal eight
minutes we see probably represnted a few hours that the main gang
would've actually been in the shop. I LOVE the idea of using
Quadruped that way! It makes complete sense. I can just imagine the
appliances having to contend with a dog fiercely guarding the place.
It would be easy to see Quad as kind of a goofball, but I find it
very believable that he would "switch gears" at night in order to do
his job. And oh gosh, poor blender...!!! 8*-{

Thanks for the links! I had seen (and commented on) Tornado's
awesome pic and idea, as well as a couple of Tech's, but now that
you point out her love of "Mishy" (which sounds like my nickname,
Michi!), I should check out her other BLT pics. They sound so
interesting!!
Yes, lol, the obvious Asian stereotype!
Omg, you're right. "What a story, Mark." I hope they asked the actor
to do a flat, emotionless, monotone voice like that to add some more
comedy to the scene....but then again, if he had sincerely read the
lines that way and they kept it in anyhow, it'd be the most
hilarious thing ever.
Ahahaha!! >D

Yeah well 'a lot of people' are idiots... I've come to realize that. XD about 80% of society is made up of morons of varying levels. Humans are typically very self-obsessed. So of course people would only want you to save your emotions for a fellow human.

Heheh yeah. I think the fact that the customer guy has time to buy the blender motor, go home and show it to "the misses" and come back for the radio tubes all in 8 minutes is quite a big indication of time-warp. Funny enough the whole idea of Quadruped and the manner in which I plan on showing him reminds me a lot of that scene in The Rescuers Down Under with the animals trying to escape and Joanna is guarding against it. Mostly because the comic would base mostly on the Blender and his/her failed attempt at escape thanks to Quadruped.

Well honestly if you look at him, you could see how Quadroped could look pretty vicious if he wanted to, he's a pretty beefy dog. I haven't read the book but I know that in the book Elmo was supposed to be the owner of the junkyard... so I wonder if there was a junkyard dog in the book. : /

Glad I could turn you on to her stuff. : )

Yeah that's pretty funny really, I wonder if it's some big inside joke or something.

'Ello again!

HAH!! Tell me about it!! I have reached the same conclusion about humans. Too many very self-centered, shallow ones lacking in empathy or imagination.

Lol! Yes. Oh, how I love The Rescuers Down Under...even more than the original. And that's another old family favorite in my house. Lemme guess--the blender would be standing in for Frank in the attempted escape? xD

Yeah, as goofy and cute as he looks, Quad is obviously pretty physically powerful and stocky...he could certainly be dangerous (or at least bowl you over) if he wanted to, and especially to an appliance. I don't recall there being a dog in Disch's story, but it would have been interesting to see the relationships between appliances and domestic animals.

Thank you for doing so! Haha, I wouldn't be surprised if it is!

Welcome back! : 3

I've been finding a lot of fellow smart people like you lately, on DA. I wonder if intelligence is confined to the art community.. hopefully not, maybe we're getting lucky and the world is getting smarter. : ]

The second one improved on the first one in about every single way. But as both a lover of vehicles and a lover of abandoned houses and such.. nothing beats that awesome washed-up riverboat from the first movie... SO friggin' awesome. [link] I used to draw that thing so much when I was little. XD But yes, the Blender would be in Frank's place.. XD but being BLT it'd be a lot less goofy and much more dark and sad... le' sigh.. excuse me I need to go cut myself. >>

Well and that's the kinda stuff I love to do when doing fanart for something, taking something from the movie and expanding it. I mean yeah, all you see of Quady is pretty silly and maybe even cute.. what a awesome surprise it'd be to see his character take a 360 change! Yay for character depth! But yeah just looking at him you can tell he'd look pretty intimidating if he were to look mean. Like you mentioned, he'd be like a friggin' bear to a poor little appliance.

Oh you've read the book? I haven't still. XD
