Description Part two of the long-term (I said it was long term neh?) project to try and get this looking really good. So far the commentary from the first go was extremely helpful. So I want to thank the folks from Critique-It personally.

This had been sitting for a while as I had hit an art slump, and a bit of depression-art-can't-do-it-don't-want-to-mess-it-up-fugue. *sighs*

Then I started attending Ellen Million's supported event called Sketch Fest and it helped bring me back. I've since been taking my sketch books to work with me and working in small sections on different pieces so as to not burn out on one piece.

~~~
This one got some special treatment. You can see the original here: [link]
I moved the fin, as suggested, and offset the outside fin a bit more so it can be seen. Tweaked the perspective of it a bit, but am not entirely happy with it, as it still seems a bit "flat".
I've smoothed the two tail "wings" and gave the second set a bit more bulk and 3-d like feel with some shading, and moved the belly-line to meet the underside of the "wing".
I may change the rear tail a bit more even so, it doesn't look far out enough in perspective, and doesn't seem to "match" I was toying with the idea of making it more rudder like, but discarded it to see if I could get the current design to work. It's not working for me and I'm not sure why. It did get shortened due to the "flipper wing" being tilted backwards a bit more.
The hands and arms I'm still toying with as well. In order to give it a more stream lined feel, I've added "arm pockets" in which the arms, double jointed-like, can fold up into them when not in use.
I may still as yet widen the chest more, as it still seems to skinny. Not enough "lung space". This is a air-breathing creature. (See: [link] Basilosaurus)
I've added some shading and texture (snorkel appendages) to give it a bit more depth. Not sure about the hands.
(copied from previous attempt)
Intent: Taking various organic, realistic animal-like parts, trying to keep in mind basic physics for a water-going creature while yet adding non-water-creature parts to it. I want to try and keep it slinky, and snake-like without loosing the whale-like or dragon-like aspects to it either.
This is a WIP and Critiques, suggestions, redlines, and commentary are very welcome and will be accepted for serious consideration.
For
What I'm looking for are:
> Suggestions on the general anatomy of the arms, chest, and rear tail, angle of the curves and their forward-facing surfaces.
> Suggestions on the hands and flippers to make them seem more realistic.
> Overall thoughts on the piece for organic/realism feel.
>Suggestions for ink/color (I may try this in water color, but it's a weak point).
Wow!
This creature is beautiful!! I lvoe how graceful and happy it looks!Absolutely awesome work!
I love the entire upper body, especially the belly just before the first set of fins.
The hands look fine to me, although I do feel they look a little wavy and undefined. Perhaps if they were a little longer? Just a thought.
The only thing that look out of place is the tail fin. I know you talked about it in the first WIP, but I feel it looks too different from the other fins and anatomy. Perhaps... If you were to remove the last two fin-segments from the last fin and then extend the ends of the fin (now 3 ends) so they look like wispy tentacles, it might work different. I've uploaded a smudged variation here - [link] - and sent you a Note
Otherwise this creature is gorgeous!
Cheers!
Dan
I've taken your thoughts into suggestion and began some work on the tail fin. I can see what you are saying in terms of the rear fin. Since the others are what generally power the creature/dragon through the water, the back fin doesn't have to be a powering fin. So the lighter more decorative look to it makes sense.
I also like how it gives me more room to work on the perspective, and drops the back fin deeper into the background. I may even slim the tail portion down more to give it more depth as well.
Thank you!
Cool! If you update it or post another version let me know! I'm really interested in this creature
Yup! Actually I was thinking about that too, but I wanted your thoughts on splitting the tail first so I didn't mention it
You're very welcome Anytime!
