Description In Lapland, the lonely mountains typical of the Wetlands and Woodlands are often called "Tunturi". These are round island mountains that rise from the otherwise flat forests and marshes. These mountains reach heights between 400 and 800 meters, with the upper areas above the tree line (mountains that do not reach the tree line are usually called "Vaara".) These kind of mountains in Lapland are remnants of the prehistoric Karelid mountains, created two billion years ago, which were eroded by the glacial ice masses of the Ice Age.
