Description
On a distant world, seeded with no vertebrates, only basal arthropods and a handful of Mollusks, Mollusterra has become a home to a variety of strange and wonderful creatures. Descended from a common slug, the viper slug is a unique Mollusk which has converged on a snake like body plan. Unlike all other terrestrial Mollusks, the viper slug does not rely on muscular contractions in its foot to propel itself, instead it relies on Lateral undulation of its long body, the type of locomotion common among snakes. No longer needing a layer of mucus to propel itself, the Viper Slug has developed a leathery skin to trap in moisture, allowing it to survive further from a source of moisture. This has also led to the viper slug being one of the first Mollusks to colonise the deserts of Mollusterra. The Viper slugs descend from a lineage of slugs which became predatory due to the lack of any other predators. Their ancestors elongated their lower tentacles to aid in feeling their environment and grasping onto prey. Eventually these lower tentacles developed into pincers of sort lined with Calcium Carbonate, to aid in gripping onto prey. The Radula of the viper slugs became reinforced with calcium carbonate and developed into a spear like device which they use to impale their prey. The eyes of the viper slug have greatly improved over time, and are now just as effective as the eyes in cephalopods. The locomotion of the viper slug has given them a significant advantage over any other terrestrial Mollusk, allowing them to move much quicker than their prey or competitors.
