It's a 3 dimensional representation of a complex math formula set. Almost everything in Mandelbulb 3D is created with math formulas. The original (2d) formulas were by mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot.

So there are zillions of mandelbulbs? And what complex? As in "not simple" or "dealing with numbers of the form n+mi?"

I'm not a math nerd so I really can't explain it in detail. But it's more than a simple formula I believe, there are other things written into the code of the various formulas as well. And in almost every formula we are also given variables to adjust, and can use up to 6 formulas combined. I say it's complex because math is a foreign language to me
