Description Epic Mickey Concept art:
This was the first attempt at the Clockwork boss. I thought it would be cool if the "It's a small world after all" would just keep skipping over and over while driving the player crazy.
Warren loved it but I think we couldn't get the rights to the actual song if I remember correctly.

Originally we were going to have the skipping record player behind it's head and Mickey had to somehow get up there to destroy it.

Rather disturbing and yet simultaneously pretty epic.

Wait a minute, how could you not get the rights to the song? According to what I've read, It's a Small World was never given a copyright.

Possibly because Disney wanted the game to be toned down when it came to the overall atmosphere of the game.

Ya'know I read the novelization of the game, and Tales of Wasteland, and I think it is cool that the record in the clock tower was kept.

the first instinct at seeing him and hearing the music is to kill it. The song was nightmare fuel without any alteration. with modified version it could be meme of making everything scarier.

I have to say, this was my favorite boss in the game. Wish the rest of them had been as fun to fight as the clock tower (was a bit annoyed that there wasn't a final boss; was expecting something with the Blot akin to Big Bad Baby Bowser from "Yoshi's Island.")

Say, have you seen this?

And I thought the ride was terrifying before! lol
Great job! If that song just played until you beat the level it would drive me insane, but nice idea anyway

Wait- you came up with the Small World boss?! That's the best boss in the game! No, wait-- that's best boss EVER.

You, sir, are my hero.

Even though you couldn't get the actual song, you still had bits and pieces of the song in the final version of the game...

But the skipping record sounds like a freaking awesome idea, and it really sucks that didn't make it into the game!

Oh very cool! It's too bad the skipping record idea didn't go through, although I do notice that defeating the Clocktower gives the "Stop The Music" achievement, so it hasn't been forgotten. Plus the music during the fight, just being a dark instrumental of the song, nevertheless made it awesome.

And yes, the art is awesome too!

I prefer the current look on the Clockwork's face as it looks creeper, although this ones closely resembles the actual face.

Hm... Well, that explains the 'stop the music' pin you get if you defeat him with paint.... But I think I like this record player idea better than just painting his face.

Pharaoh-Ink [2011-02-06 22:41:04 +0000 UTC]

I think that breaking the record would've made it a LOT clearer as to why the Clocktower was insane in the first place! XD I left it wondering why it was even a boss (still a cool one though!) It could've been where you paint both of his arms in and when he takes you up to his face, you could've leapt onto the Clocktower and located the record player from there to thin out. But I think it was at least explained in the digi-comics.

I love this boss concept so much- and I love the final design you guys gave him!

E-Man276 [2011-02-06 21:54:30 +0000 UTC]

I kind of prefer the teeth the current Clockwork Boss has now, but the idea of smashing a record player to sooth its rage is a lot better concept than to either paint its face, or trick it into breaking its arms. If that song is irritating enough to even enrage Smallworld's own mascot, then I'm quite terrified actually...

So, what you're saying is that Disney doesn't actually own the rights to the Smallworld song and a third party somehow owns it?

Khalipse In reply to E-Man276 [2011-02-14 21:09:06 +0000 UTC]

Lol this game terrorified me when i saw the cartoon's lost escence as monsters inside the blot, I had some little nightmares XD

Upchuck557 [2011-02-06 21:32:20 +0000 UTC]

So originally the lyrics would go along with the song during the battle? I wonder who owns the song then.

SackGuy [2011-02-06 21:12:23 +0000 UTC]

Even the Clockwork is annoyed by the actual song...a small but nevertheless important change.

gallantmon8 [2011-02-06 19:02:55 +0000 UTC]

Somehow, I think that getting up there to destroy the record player would be much harder................The boss was one of the most fun ones in the game nonetheless, though.
And the fight music for this boss was one of the most epic pieces on the soundtrack; It's a shame said music wasn't on the actual OST that you can get from iTunes..............Oh well, it's still amazing.

Oooooh~!!!

I likes that idea! I also like that you incorporated the record player in the comic, as well. Nicely done!
