Good afternoon!
I'd like to first say that this is a very old opinion of mine, and it has changed since then. I do quite like all the characters now, despite their mistakes and issues. But, if I remember correctly, my reasoning for disliking Xion was such:
As stated before, I really like (even love!) some characters that I disliked years ago, if not only for the fact that Square Enix is amazing at building dynamic characters, and evolving their actions and personality through staggering character development.

Oh okay! Thanks! I never really understood it (I only got into KH after a lot of the games were released, and KH 358/2 Days was my FIRST KH game...) so it confused me. I was thinking about it last night in bed, and I figured, yeah, I guess Xion could be a pretty pointless character, so I understand your reasoning a bit more as well...

Many people dislike Xion because she seems like an unnecessary insert into 358/2 Days. The general reasons are that (1) she is Number 14 in Organization 13, (2) she is basically an imperfect clone of Roxas (a puppet), and (3) she adds an entirely different element into the story.
Also, I have an objection to your comment about "kairi and the other female characters" doing nothing. (I will assume that you do not mean all of the female characters, but just the ones unique to Kingdom Hearts.).
Granted, I do agree with you that Kairi doesn't do much to help Sora, but in KH and KH2, Kairi was one of the reasons Sora kept on with his efforts.
Namine does so much shit, it's amazing. First, she works with the Organization to rearrange all of Sora's memories to the Organization's desires in KH:CoM. Then she escapes her confinement to reveal to Sora that she is not the one in his memories, but Kairi, whom she had made him forget, was the one important to him. She then puts Sora to sleep, and with the help of DiZ, painstakingly gathers and replaces all of Sora's memory, many of which were held by Xion.
Larxene actually fights. She actually remembers her past. She actually has her own goals. Oh, and she has real memories. She works against Sora to follow Marluxia's wishes to obtain the keyblade and overthrow the Organization.
Olette is a very close friend of Roxas', even if only in a simulation. (As compared to Xion, who Roxas only mourned with the phrase, "But Xion! Who else will I have ice-cream with?")
Fuu is a member of Seifer's gang, and even though she says very little, she is still a welcome part of the group.
I believe I've covered all of the KH girls. Please, feel free to respond with any complaints that you may have.

They just threw her in there to confuse the fuck out of people and milk whatever they can out of fangirls like, "OMG XIONxROXAS SO KAWAII, NO, XIONxRIKU, NO WAIT... XIONxEVERYONEANDTHEIRGRANDMA." I just don't like the idea of a 14th member in a group for ONLY THIRTEEN. /rage.
