Description Kakunodate in the spring. 角館 is in Akita prefecture in Japan, (famous for a series of old Japanese architcture preserved as walk-in museums). The cherry blossoms were blooming everywhere. According to the local people, cherry blossoms blooming on the mountains, by the river, and in the Samurai Village is a really rare event. One grandmother assured us it's been 20 years since that last happend, so we were really lucky to see them all at once.  It's raining tomorrow though, so the delicate petals probably won't last much longer.

I love these kinds of sakura. The weeping cherry blossoms are a bit darker pink, as you can see. Quite pretty.

what's the tree called? I know it has cherry blossoms but it looks like a different kind of tree, other then that you are really lucky that you got to see that. it's pretty cool, wish I could travel for such a thing

It's called shidarezakura actually-- a kind of cherry blossom. しだれ桜 (Noun) 1. weeping cherry (Prunus spachiana); shidare cherry: Other forms (kanji and kana) 枝垂桜 【しだれざくら】、枝垂れ桜 【しだれざくら】、垂れ桜 【しだれざくら】、シダレザクラ

they are pretty common in Japan.

I agree, it was lucky to go again-- I enjoyed spending the time with my family there.

How beautiful! I wish our architecture went with the fauna as well it does in Japan.

It is especially so in this area-- the architecture of even newer buildings is built to match the old style buildings in Kakunodate because of all the museums/preserved houses.

As it should--it's a very dignified style that should be preserved and updated without being replaced.

They are stunning in person.

Actually, cherry blossoms don't smell that strongly! Plum blossom has a much more distinctive fragrance. THough it's probably for the best that cherry blossoms have little scent, or else I (and half the population here) would sneeze. Though those with hay fever are sneezing anyway... XD
