Description Kurdish soldiers from the Iraqi Army's Presidential Brigade qualify on their new M-16s. They taught me a few words in Kurdish, and I got to realize how big of a difference there is between Kurdish and Arabic.

LUCKY! The government just banned deviantart from work computers.... Rats... They must've found out what I was doing during my downtime....

rampantmonkey In reply to HandBanana001 [2008-02-27 22:48:17 +0000 UTC]

Oooh, ouch. There's not much they ban here...too much effort. And actually, I'd say being annoyed at you for, I assume, having this profile up on your downtime is pretty ridiculous. This profile, and the photographs you have on it, does more to improve positive views on the US Military than any of their recruitment drives or PR work. Because its a real person actually living the experience and not some eedjit piloting a desk back in Washington (or London/Canberra from my point of view). Your honest, real view of what you see, with accompanying occasional lack of sharpness, or slightly less than perfect framing, is a hundred times more successful than any billion dollar, spin doctor arranged, staged photoshoot.

I'll be honest, I disagree with what we were told our two countries were going to war for, and the apparent dishonesty involved in it, but I still firmly believe in supporting our troops, who are all, as cliched as it sounds, heroes in their own way. Your photos show some of the individuals who fight, and who and why they're fighting. Which can only be a good thing.

Hmmm, rather deep and involved for a comment, apologies for rambling.

Unfortunately, we use a commercial Web filter (Web Sense) and it puts a pretty tight clamp down on everything. But that's fine ... I just do all of it with my laptop and spare time : )

It's quite all right that you rambled. My job in the air force is public affairs ... they teach us in school to always tell the truth and to be honest and keep propaganda out of it ... some people follow that rule throughout their careers, and others don't... so far I've stayed pretty true to what I learned... Let's hope i stay that way.

Laptop and spare time...I thought they didn't give you lot spare time. Clearly you're being paid too much I'm pretty sure that politicians get the same lessons in honesty, truthfulness and non-propaganda...I guess it sinks in more with some people than others. I figure if you've managed to get cynical, sceptical little me not to bite you're doing something right.

Hah! I get a few hours a day to myself. Just enough time to watch some TV and get on the Internet and bug the crap out of people I know.... Bah! I always get paid too much. I'd do this job for free if I didn't have bills...

Politicians are all liars... It's their job. In poll after poll, every year, the U.S. military is always the #1 most trusted source of information. Politicians are close to being at the top... but they're still lower than us. Information that we release to the public is 99.9% always factual ..

Ahh bills...the evil that is bills...and taxes...

I would attempt to argue with you that lying isnt a politician's job, but then I'd end up on my soapbox and you'd have to resort to water cannon or rubber bullets...or a plain old rugby tackle...to get me down.

Bills are indeed evil, as are taxes.....

You Brits and your rugby.... Some of the funniest moments of my life have been spent in this room watching the Brits watch Rugby while yelling at the TV.

Hehe, you should have seen the entire city of Cardiff after Wales beat England a couple of weeks ago. I was in the pub watching the game and it was insane, thought they were going to bring the second floor down on us...singing, dancing, jumping up and down...hurling abuse at the ref...and then the week after the city was full of men in kilts for the Wales-Scotland game...You think we Brits are bad though, you want to see the Aussies and the Kiwis...Rugby isn't a game...its a religion.

WOW!!! Thats different! When I was there they had rusty and beat up AK-47's and AK-74's. I just hope they REALLY take care of those weapons because they won't last over there without cleanings...

CaptainBaconMan In reply to Salakin [2008-02-28 01:11:10 +0000 UTC]

Hey, an AK-74, is a heck of a lot better than an AK-47. It has some advantages over an M16 even.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Salakin In reply to CaptainBaconMan [2008-03-17 06:27:21 +0000 UTC]

accuracy lacks in all the AK's compared to the M16/M4 colts. I've gotten to shoot 74's and 47's and the accuracy on both is not as good...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CaptainBaconMan In reply to Salakin [2008-03-17 19:34:01 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I know, but the AK's power is much greater. But in the end, I guess accuracy is more needed.

Yeah, when it comes to stopping power a 762 will definately put someone down faster than a 223...

Speaking of stopping power, a friend of mine in the military told me they weren't going to incorporate the dragon scale kevlar into the combat outfit. Why would they not do that? That stuff is amazing.

Salakin In reply to CaptainBaconMan [2008-04-16 17:13:41 +0000 UTC]

Because Aimpiont, the guys to make the current vest have a safer, and better product. Dragon Scale dose not stop as many rounds and the Intercepter vests. Its cost compared to effectiveness is low, and the Intercepter Body Armor provides much better personal protectoin for the soldiers, though its heavy as hell. I was glad I had it over in Iraq.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CaptainBaconMan In reply to Salakin [2008-04-16 22:43:22 +0000 UTC]

I always heard that dragonscale was tougher than the interceptor.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Salakin In reply to CaptainBaconMan [2008-04-17 01:22:15 +0000 UTC]

Not true. There are weak points in dragon scale that make it a flawed piece of equipment. I personally would not want to wear dragon scale. Everything has its flaws though. Intercepter body armor is fairly heavy which makes being on your feet while wearing it very tiring.
