My headcanon series is all over the place and I post about these events very un-chronologically, but I guess that's just who I am lol. Anyway, I'm exploring a new part of the timeline, which is the time between Mufasa and Sarabi's coronation and Simba's birth.

My idea for this headcanon came to me when I was thinking about how Mufasa, Sarabi, and Scar could easily pass as being quite old in TLK, like middle-aged. It feels especially striking when you think about how Mufasa and Sarabi are (to our knowledge) first-time parents of a young cub. Of course, older parents are increasingly common and it doesn't necessarily have to mean anything, but just hear me out for a second.

My headcanon theory is that Mufasa and Sarabi are indeed older first-time parents, because they struggled with infertility. After getting married and being crowned as king and queen, they spent years trying but not being able to have the cubs they so desperately wanted, and it was devastating to them, so much so that being the ruling couple started to feel almost pointless to them without the aspect of raising a future ruler to take their place.

As they got older and remained without cubs, Mufasa and Sarabi really started stressing out about who would take over the kingdom after they were gone. Obviously, Scar would automatically be the next in line, but he really was pretty much exactly their age and there was no guarantee that he'd be healthy enough or even alive to take the throne years from now. Being the king was all Scar had ever wanted, though, and they knew it, so after discussing it for a long time, Mufasa and Sarabi approached Scar with the deal of a lifetime: Mufasa would start training him to be the next king, and if they didn't end up having any miracle cubs (which seemed unlikely at this point), they would retire early to let Scar have a turn as the king he'd always wanted to be. Scar, of course, accepted the offer, and became a new lion right away - the angsty, grumpy, and antisocial Scar everyone knew him to be was gone as he suddenly became happy and friendly, empathetic even. For the first time in his Scar's life, his future seemed bright, and he was getting the only thing he had ever truly wanted.
