Description
Jean (French name for John) runs from the metro exit. He slows down and sits down on a seat in the Jardin des Tuileries.
Mélina progresses on her leg and her pair of crutches. She approaches the place where a jogger spoke to her the day before. She recognizes her tracksuit over there on a chair. Facing him, she unlocks the support on her left crutch and lifts her stump to put it down.
Jean gets up smiling: “Hello Miss, my name is Jean.”
Mélina smiles when Jean approaches to shake her hand: “Me, it’s Mélina. »
"Let's sit down for a while, it will be easier to talk than running like yesterday. »
Mélina lowers her stump, raises the support of the crutch and bends her leg while maintaining her balance on her crutches: “Yes! »
“I saw you running several times last Autumn. I wanted to meet you without scaring you. I saw you sitting here after your run. I decided to come and sit on another chair close to you the next day. But you did not come, nor the following days. During the winter, I didn't really come running anymore. I resumed at the beginning of spring, watching you each time. It was only yesterday that I saw you again, with a noticeable change. I'm sorry for the misfortune that befell you. »
“On my way home by bike, a truck hit me. I fell and my foot was caught between the twin tires on the rear axle. My knee was twisted and dislocated. My head hit the tar and I lost consciousness. If I hadn't worn a good helmet, I would have been killed. The driver who was following the truck came to my rescue and her husband called the emergency services and the police; I learned that later. She also gave her dashcam to the police, which helped to find the driver responsible, who had not stopped. When I woke up in a hospital bed, I was surrounded by pipes, cables and devices; my left thigh was firmly bandaged, but there was nothing left from the knee. Since then, I have learned to live on one leg and two crutches. I should receive a prosthesis in a month”
The conversation continues for a while.
"I'll be away from Paris this weekend and won't be back until Monday evening. Mélina, can I invite you to the restaurant on Tuesday? I'll pick you up in front of your house at 6:30 p.m. »
Mélina accepts and gives him the address. That day, neither Mélina nor Jean had time left to practice their jogging.
Late Tuesday afternoon, Mélina takes a shower and puts on a light dress, fitted at the waist, which ends just above the knee and hides the end of her stump. In the evening, Jean stops his car. Mélina comes down the 3 steps from the porch. John opens the door. Mélina settles into the seat and places the crutches on her right.
The meal was good, on a nice terrace. Jean and Mélina have the impression that the evening has passed at full speed. They exchanged their smartphone numbers. Jean stops his car at the end of the evening; incredible, a slot is free to drop off Mélina without hindering traffic. “I would like to see you more. How about a trip to the swimming pool next Saturday? »
“Do you really want to see an invalid like me?” Mélanie raises the hem of her dress a little with her left hand to make her stump visible and opens the door with her right hand to turn on the ceiling light: “Look at my ugly stump. Wouldn't you be ashamed to be seen next to me? »
“There is nothing ugly about you. This stump is a part of you, that's all. So for Saturday? »
Mélina pushes back her dress to hide her stump and places her left hand on Jean's right, still on the steering wheel: “I'll call my doctor tomorrow to check that the swimming pool and the sun's rays are not contraindicated. I'll text you. Book your Saturday already. »
Mélina gets out of the car, climbs the 3 steps, turns around and makes a sign by blowing a kiss on her hand in the direction of Jean. She types in the code and opens the door. The light automatically turns on in the entrance room.
Wednesday before noon, Jean's smartphone rings. He reads the message: “No more worrying about the pool or the sun. I received the “disabled” sticker which I stuck on my windshield. I'll pick you up at 10 a.m. and so I can park near the pool entrance. I'll make the sandwiches. Otherwise, I was a little suspicious at first and I did not give you my real address. A friend of me lives there. From my apartment, I just have to walk across an inner courtyard to use the door where you saw me. I was worried that you would try to walk me home after our party, as somebody already tried. Hearing your insistence on meeting me this spring, I was suspicious. It didn't happen. I saw that you are respectful and here is my real address, in the next street… To be honest, I was a little frustrated that you didn't try anything, and at the same time happy and so relieved. You seem different to me than the other guys I've dated. Kisses. Email'"
Paul challenges Jean who is facing him: “You look very funny, your face is beaming, is it the woman of your life who is sending you a message? »
" … maybe… "
Jean replies: “At 10 a.m. on Saturday, I’ll take care of the drinks. I prefer to discuss face to face your long message to which I cannot respond briefly. Kisses. Jean"
