A long walk through mud sodden paths, the retrieval of four thousand rose petals and a turbulent battle with the unforgiving bracken of winter. This is the adventure a trio of creative artists found themselves embarking upon on a cold wet December morning in the hope of bringing their vision to life. The aim of this shoot was to create a provocative contrast of glamour and desolation, an image that would inspire the thought processes of its audience…

The landscape was appropriately bleak, emanating a state of depression, with very little color or life to boast of, reflecting a time of hardship. This was exactly the backdrop that was needed in order to expose the most basic of human qualities, survival. This is where the story begins. The contrast immediately asked questions, what was such a beautiful and glamorous model doing here? These questions resonated throughout the process of this piece until we finally had the answer … she was enduring.

The character O’Hara stands out in defiance against the harsh conditions, the vibrant dress and glamorous makeup symbolise O’Hara’s strength and vitality a midst the dark. The character refuses to become a part of the landscape around her, stubbornly holding out in the hope of better days. Endurance is a test, one that people from all walks of life must take; hardship doesn’t discriminate from rich to poor. The character of this piece is enduring – she must survive.  The cold hard iron railings of our chosen location added an extra layer of haunting beauty. The gates themselves represent faded glory, standing tall while the earth has overgrown around it. Once the grand entrance to Appuldurcombe house they are now simply a reminder frozen in time.

The name O’hara was a title given to the piece long after the production process began but as the story began to unravel in my mind I couldn’t help but notice the comparison to Scarlet O’Hara. A strong willed character from the 1936 novel, Gone with The wind by Margaret Mitchell. Scarlet is pushed to the very limits of her endurance, hell bent on her quest for survival during the uncertain years of the American civil war (and those following). This image shows the character in the very moment of survival, where she has come from and where she is going is another story but for the one singular moment that is captured here – she is fighting.

The shoot began at 8:30am and was finished at 2pm, as a team we were constantly challenged by the elements which seemed set against us. Covered in brambles, stung from head to toe and smothered in mud we came together and made light of the situation we had put ourselves in. In the end we achieved the results we wanted and felt the challenges themselves added to the story and the process we undertook. The resulting colds were so very worth it.

I love the symbolism here!  Just curious, but is she inside the gate, trying to get out, or outside the gate, trying to get in?

Well ideally I'd leave that up to interpretation.

Geographically she was outside the gate.

Symbolically I will leave it up to your imagination

What a beautiful piece! The contrast between the background and the gate is really nice and so is the colour of the dress!

Splendid work! The only thing I could fault is the hem of the dress and how it seemingly crumples against the ground.

it's so surreal and mysterious!
Your description only makes it all the better, for it is expertly written and
very creative! The picture really does evoke a sense of "desolate glamour",
now that I see the contrast between the beautiful red dress and the lugubrious
setting around it.

Oh boy... I love your gallery. When it comes to photography, I like geometry, and the way you made this composition makes me think of Art Nouveau creations. The background is gorgeous, the colors are wonderful and I like this pale optical flare on the background, probably the sun shining given the hour you made this photoshoot.

The dress is awesome, and the overall render is stunning! Again, congratulations

Thank you so much

I like using natural symmetry or angels when out on location. I usually look for places that have very specific lines (even if other people can't see them) I really appreciate you noticing the geometry!

We chose to do this in the bleak mid winter because we thought it would add that final level of atmosphere to the image we were trying to create! The sun had that beautiful golden hue that it only has at that time of year!

This is a really great piece. Great pose and expression from the model, very fantasy princess dress, a beautiful mask/makeup and to top it off the background is an amazing spot.  Such a beautiful gate with a beautiful countryside to compliment it.

It would have been nice to raise the model up somehow to get her closer to the top for a closer composition, but truly, that is my only critique.  Great work in post as well.

Thank you!

This piece took alot of time and scouting - I like to take time in the pre processing to find the best locations for a conceived shoot.
We really hoped all the elements would come together and compliment one another so I really appreciate what you have said
and judging by your comments you are truly honest about what you see. My utter thanks to you

Having looked back at the image I see what you mean and will experiment with the cropping just to see how it looks.
I do quite like however how she is belittled by the overall image. Will be interesting to see how it will affect the atmosphere/drama of the piece with the change!

I love the contrast of her red dress with the gloomy, sepia background. And her posture in from of the gate make it seems to me like she wants to get away from the dull place she's in and go explore the world (where dafuq I get those weird ideas?)

That is awesome! I think a piece of art that people can derive meaning/stories from is a good piece of art so I am HUGELY flattered by your weird ideas!

The piece was all about escapism and her contrasting the dull and somewhat murky surroundings! The landscape was appropriately bleak, emanating a state of depression, with very little color or life to boast of, reflecting a time of hardship. This was exactly the backdrop that was needed in order to expose the most basic of human qualities, survival.

Nice use of a splash of color! The red is striking with the green grass on the other side of it. When I look at this picture it seems like I'm watching a story unfold. very expressive but also mysterious!

Creating stories is something I strive to do when designing a conceptual shoot.

I like how the red really pops and adds a focus to the picture that isl sepia like. I like the idea of a woman running out from a masquerade ball of some sorts to the back gate. I don't know much about photography, but I do like this!

The gate is part of what was once a celebrated manor house and gardens which unfortunately got bombed during the war, the shell of the house and gems such as this gate still stand
