That's kind of a hard question to answer, since costume-making is such an involved process and the way I made my Kakyoin isn't quite the same as the way my other friends who've made Kakyoin costumes went about it. What specifically do you want to know about? Pattern suggestions? Material suggestions? How I did the wig? I'm glad to issue tips, but I need some more specific questions.

OK! Actual Japanese gakurans are made from a sort of twill weave, often a wool or polyester blend. My Kakyoin outfit, however, is made from polyester poplin that I found at a local fabric store because it was $3 a yard and approximately the right weight. You don't want to use anything lightweight like quilters cotton, and for god's sake never satin or crushed velvet (even if I see some Japanese cosplayers using those, I never like how it looks).

As for a pattern... I recommend modifying one of the Matrix coat patterns you can get from the Halloween section of the major pattern books at your local fabric store chain, or even walmart.

Great pic and costume, H!

Now how can you pull off a version with a big hole in your chest/stomach?

Aww man!

I hope next time if you see me (I'll be running around at Y-con, albeit at some point with a mask) or if I see you that we can say hi!
