Description
In the municipal elections of 12 April 1931, little support was shown for pro-monarchy parties in the major cities. As a result, many people considered a republic as an alternative, and in reaction the supporters of the military dictatorship proceeded to a new Pronunciamiento and took power in Madrid.

The Republic was declared in Seville, but the union between Republicans and the far-left was not maintained and the Frente Popular went its own way. In the north, the supporters of the old draft constitution seceded in their turn. The Carlist opponents of the monarchy also rose up. Soon the kingdom was also divided between supporters of an absolute monarchy and a military junta and had to deal with an anarchist rebellion.

Meanwhile, Catalonia and the Basque Country declared their independence while the Portuguese regime established a puppet state in Galicia.
